Area September 19, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 13 Three local elementary schools have earned the national Blue Ribbon designation for 2012. The winners, who received notice on Sept. 7, include the Betsy Ross School in Mahwah, the Mary A. Hubbard School in Mahwah, and the Willard School in Ridgewood. This national program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students perform at very high levels, or where students have made significant, quantifiable improvements in academic achievement. However, as part of the application process, district officials are also invited to include information about specific programs, details about the support provided by the community, and other relevant factors. “Our nation has no greater responsibility than helping Local schools earn Blue Ribbon designation all children realize their full potential,” said Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said. “Schools honored with the National Blue Ribbon Schools award are committed to accelerating student achievement and preparing students for success in college and careers. Their work reflects the conviction that every child has promise and that education is the surest pathway to a strong, secure future.” The United States Department of Education asserts that a National Blue Ribbon Schools flag has become a trademark of excellence that is recognized in thousands of communities. Since the program was launched 30 years ago, the U.S. DOE has honored 7,000 of America’s schools. The department requests nominations from the top education official in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and the Bureau of Indian Education. The Council for American Private Education nominates private schools. Only 417 schools may be nominated each year. The Secretary of Education then invites nominated schools to submit an application, which requires several months to prepare. In November, representatives from all winning schools will gather in Washington, D.C. for a ceremony. They will receive a plaque and flag. Ridgewood’s Blue Ribbon application team.
