Library announces reopening, events The Lee Memorial Library in Allendale will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 11 after of a month of renovations and upgrades. Library hours are as follows: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Sept. 12, Bob Malgieri, tree and shrub care manager at Borst Landscape and Design, will present “Protecting Your Trees and Shrubs from Hungry Deer” at 7 p.m. Malgieri will offer expert recommendations ranging from home remedies to mechanical devices to safely and humanely deter deer. Visit the library at 2 p.m. on Sept. 15 for “In Plein Air: The Art and Artistry of Ella Yang.” This program will include an exhibit of original works painted from life and a discussion of the artist’s creative inspirations, methods, and challenges. Yang, a graduate of Yale and Columbia, has studied at the Corcoran School of Art and the International School of Art in Umbria, Italy. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Brooklyn Fine Arts magazine, “100 New York Painters,” and in many gallery shows and juried competitions. The Poetry Circle will return on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. On Sept. 18, the book group will discuss Amy Waldman’s “Submission” at 7:30 p.m. Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk. No registration is necessary, and all are welcome. The library is located at 500 West Crescent Avenue. Town-wide Garage Sale set Allendale residents are invited to participate in the Ninth Annual Town-wide Garage Sale organized by the Allendale Woman’s Club. The sale, set for Saturday, Sept. 15, will benefit the club’s community service projects and charities. The sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Rain
date: Sept. 16.) In addition to handling event advertising and securing necessary permits, the AWC also publishes and distributes a map highlighting the addresses of all participating households. Lawn markers are provided to identify all participating homes. Library trustees to meet The Lee Memorial Library Board of Trustees will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the library, which is located at 500 West Crescent Avenue. Members of the public are welcome. Chamber plans meeting The Allendale Chamber of Commerce will host a dinner meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at the Allendale Bar and Grill, 67 West Allendale Avenue. The topic for discussion will be the borough’s plans for Festival Day. RSVP to Bill Ford at Bank of America by calling (201) 825-0448. The Chamber meets the second Tuesday of the month. Allendale businesses are welcome to join. Fyke plans September events On Sept. 15 and 16, Fyke Nature Association will host a trip to the hawk watch at New York’s Mount Peter. Attendees are invited to attend one or both days, and join the regulars at the lookout. The group has hopes of spotting a big broad-winged hawk flight. Directions to the hawk watch may be found at fykenature.org. Brien Szabo will present “The Glorious Variety of Nature in the Northeast” at the association’s Sept. 28 meeting. The group will meet at the Allendale Municipal Building at 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale. Szabo’s photos bring viewers on a tour of nature that includes subzero climates to night hikes to mountain tops and close-up looks at wildlife. The meeting will begin at 8 p.m. Fyke has planned a State Line Hawk Watch on Sept. 29. Attendees will meet at State Line lookout in Alpine to

Relay for Life seeks participants The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Allendale is set for Friday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 29. The event will be held at Crestwood Lake Park on West Crescent Avenue. Relay for Life is an overnight community celebration at which individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance, and take turns walking or running around a track relay style to raise funds to fight cancer. Held in more than 5,000 communities across the country, the Relay for Life gives people a chance to remember loved ones lost as they fight against the disease. On Sept. 28 on-site registration is at 5 p.m., and the Opening Ceremony and Survivors Lap begin at 7 p.m. At 10 p.m. there will be the Luminaria Ceremony and the closing ceremony will be held at 5 a.m. on Sept. 29. The cost to register is $10 and may be completed at the event at 5 p.m. of by sending a check may be made payable to: American Cancer Society.
