September 5, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 7 Ho-Ho-Kus Engineer evaluates bid for preemptive lights by Jennifer Crusco Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Engineer David Hals is reviewing the low bid the municipality received for the two preemptive lights that will be installed near the firehouse on Sheridan Avenue. The lights flash when fire trucks are entering or leaving the station, and are intended as a safety measure. The two proposals that were opened last week included a $58,352 bid from Kevco Electric of Bloomfield and a $46,647 bid from HBC Co., Inc. of Lodi. Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Clerk Laura Borchers explained that these bids include the two preemptive lights, installation, and a portion of the engineering cost. At press time, Hals was involved in the vetting process for HBC. Ho-Ho-Kus previously received a $150,000 grant for this project and, if the borough does not use the total amount, any excess would be returned to the state, Borchers noted. The New Jersey Department of Transportation grant, which was announced in January 2011, is not a matching grant, and does not require the borough to commit any local funds to this project. The borough intends to install one of the new lights north of the firehouse on Sheridan Avenue, while the other would be installed south of the station. The goal is to improve safety by reminding motorists who are driving past the firehouse to exercise caution when trucks are being maneuvered into and out of the garage. Borough officials have previously noted that some motorists attempt to pass the trucks, thereby creating an unsafe situation. The lights will encourage motorists to slow down and to stop, when necessary. Hals developed the drawings for the location of the signals, and approvals were then requested, and subsequently received, from Bergen County and from the State of New Jersey. Bergen County approval was necessary because the signals will be installed on a county road. State approval was necessary because the borough will use a state grant to pay for this project. The system could be in place by October if the work progresses as anticipated. Wortendyke Pottery Studio Rendering showing the proposed locations of the two lights.
