Page 22 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • September 5, 2012 New DVD releases (continued from Restaurant page) to let his known future unfold or follow a path that will change it. “If I had it to do over” time travel movies are not new. “Back to the Future” hit it out of the ball park with this theme, and “It’s a Wonderful Life” has been an enduring classic for decades, so “Touchback” does not break new ground. Still, it is pleasant, the characters decent, and the performances effective. Blu-ray extras include audio commentary with the director and producer and a making-of featurette. “Rose Marie” (Warner Archive) is the kind of film MGM mogul Louis B. Mayer loved: an old-fashioned, sentimental musical in which problems were slight and resolved by the fade-out. Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy were considerably less hip than contemporaries Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and not nearly as natural or charming as Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, yet their operatic romances were extremely popular in the 1930s. “Rose Marie” (1936) is about Marie de Flor (MacDonald), a glamorous Canadian prima donna renowned for her beauty, exquisite voice, and fiery temperament. When news arrives that her brother Jack (Jimmy Stewart) has been wounded in a prison escape, Marie decides she must go to him despite the danger. Lured into the wilderness, she encounters Sergeant Bruce (Eddy), who is hunting the fugitive. Sergeant Bruce is soon enchanted by Marie -- and on her trail. The film features the songs, “Rose Marie, I Love You,” “Song of the Mounties,” and the often-parodied “Indian Love Call.” There are no extras on this DVD release. “Bored to Death: The Complete Third Season” (HBO Home Entertainment) is available on both Blu-ray and DVD. Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman) continues to ply his trade as an unlicensed private detective, getting caught up in increasingly risky jobs and absurd adventures around New York City with George (Ted Danson) and Ray (Zach Galifianakis), his constantly supportive partners in solving crime. In addition, a shocking revelation drives him to embark on one of his most important cases yet: the quest to find his biological father. Moreover, Jonathan’s writing career is finally starting to look up with the publication of his long-delayed second book. Bonuses on the two-disc set include deleted scenes, outtakes, backstories on the episodes, and audio commentaries with cast members and directors.
