Upper Saddle River Day set Upper Saddle River Day will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8. A DJ will entertain all day, and activities will include family games, face painting, carnival rides, and stage performances. (Rain date: Sept. 9.) The Upper Saddle River Historical Society, Preservation Commission, and Environmental Committee will be on hand from 3 to 6 p.m. Performances will include the Syncopated Seniors at 3 p.m., a magic show at 3:45 p.m., the New Jersey Concert Band at 4:30 p.m., and Applause PAC from the Saddle River Cultural Center from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Food wristbands may be purchased in advance at the Upper Saddle River Library at 245 Lake Street or at borough hall, 376 West Saddle River Road. Wristbands are $30 for a family of up to six members, and $10 for an individual. Wristbands are free for seniors (age 62 and over) and children under six. Tickets will be available the day of the picnic. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets and chairs. Trustees announce retreat The Upper Saddle River Board of Education will hold its board retreat on Friday, Sept. 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The session will be held at the Upper Saddle River Administration Office at 395 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. No action will be taken at this meeting. Opera lecturer to address seniors Dr. Lou Orazio, a retired educator and opera lecturer, will address the senior citizens’ club at the Church of the Presentation on Tuesday, Sept. 11. This 9:45 a.m. meeting will be held in the church Community Room at 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. Dr. Orazio will outline the dynamics of Il Volo, the sensational teenage Italian tenors. CDs of three 16- and 17-year-old singers will be heard in renditions of popular and contemporary Italian, American, and Spanish songs, including “O Sole Mio,” “Smile,” and “Notte Stellata.” Some translations will be available. Seniors age 55 and over are invited to attend. The meeting will also include the installation of new officers. The group has planned a trip to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular on Wednesday, Nov. 28. The bus will leave the church parking lot at 8:45 a.m. for the 11 a.m. performance, and will return at approximately 2:30 p.m. Participants interested in dinner afterward may drive or car pool to Mezza Luna in Allendale. The cost for the show is $102 with dinner, or $72 with-
out dinner. Tickets are for orchestra seating. Payment by check is due by Sept. 14, and may be made payable to “Presentation Seniors” and mailed to 271 West Saddle River Road, Upper Saddle River, NJ 07458 or placed in the club’s mailbox in the church office. The new hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday hours, which will be from 1 to 5 p.m., will resume on Sept. 16. Book groups to meet The Upper Saddle River Library’s Novels at Night book group will meet on Sept. 12 to discuss Jonathan Tropper’s “This Is Where I Leave You.” The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. This group meets on the first Wednesday of the month. On Sept. 13, Coffee Talk will discuss “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood. Coffee Talk meets at 10:30 a.m. on the second Thursday of the month. Copies of the books are available at the circulation desk of the library located at 245 Lake Street in Upper Saddle River. Chop Suey Quilt class forming The Upper Saddle River Library will offer a Chop Suey Quilt Class on Thursdays, beginning Sept. 20. The class will meet for six sessions from 7 to 9 p.m. at the library at 243 Lake Street. Experienced teacher and award-winning quilter Kathleen Davies will demonstrate the simple technique using strips and tubes to cut the squares. Participants should bring fabric in a wide variety of colors. The fee is $60 for Upper Saddle River cardholders; $70 for non-USR cardholders. Class size is limited. Club changes name, welcomes new members The Saddle River Valley Residents Club, formerly known as the Saddle River Valley Newcomers Club, welcomes all residents from Saddle River and Upper Saddle River, regardless of the length of their residency, and those from neighboring towns. A Fall Kick-Off meeting will be held Sept. 13. Prospective members are invited to meet members and become acquainted with the club. Highlands recreation soccer players sought The Upper Saddle River High School Recreation Soccer Team has slots open for the fall season. This co-ed team is open to all boys and girls in the Northern Highlands High School District who will be entering grades nine through 12 in September.
