Halloween Poster Contest & Parade set This month, the Allendale Holiday Observers will again sponsor the Annual Halloween Parade on Wednesday, Oct. 31. The event will be held in the Brookside School auditorium. Children in preschool through the eighth grade are invited to parade their Halloween costumes at this 7 p.m. event. Prizes will be awarded. A light dinner, candy, snacks, and beverages will be served. Allendale trick-or-treats for UNICEF The Allendale PTO is sponsoring an educational fundraising program designed to teach children about their peers in developing countries and encourage them to help others in need. Residents are asked to drop their loose change into the UNICEF boxes that trick-or-treaters will bring to their doors on Halloween. Founded in 1946, UNICEF helps save, protect, and improve the lives of children in over 150 countries through immunization, health care, therapeutic foods, clean water, sanitation, emergency relief, education, and more. Rotary Club welcomes new members The Allendale/Saddle River Rotary Club welcomes new members to its weekly meetings. Sessions are held at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays at Savini’s Restaurant, 168 West Crescent Avenue, Allendale. Book Sale back in business The newly-renovated lobby at the Lee Memorial Library is complete and the ongoing Book Sale hosted by the Friends of the Library is back in business. The new shelves allow many more sale books to be displayed for easy browsing. Also featured is a special section for children’s books. Current best-sellers, fiction, nonfiction, paperbacks, children’s books, tapes, and videos are priced from 25 cents to $1. Proceeds from the sale go directly to the library for the purchase of new materials. Visit the library at 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale. Free health consultations offered The Bergen County Department of Health Services offers a free health consultation program in the Allendale for adult residents. Staffed by a public health nurse, guidance and referral services are provided for health maintenance. Monitoring of health history, and height, weight, and blood pressure checks are offered at each visit. Residents are assured of complete confidentiality. Rotary hosts Swing & Salsa Night The Allendale/Saddle River Rotary will host a Swing & Salsa Night on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Studio L, 4 North Street, Suite 400 in Waldwick. This BYOB event will include food, soft drinks, and dancing all night. Lessons will begin at 7 p.m., and the DJ will be in full swing at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person. Woman’s Club plans Holiday Breakfast The Allendale Woman’s Club will host a Holiday Breakfast on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Brookside School Cafeteria, 100 Brookside Avenue in Allendale. This annual event is open to individuals of all ages and religious affiliations. The event features a full breakfast, crafts and activities, and a visit from Santa. Participants are asked to bring a new, unwrapped gift suitable for at-risk children ages birth through 12 years old, to be distributed by OASIS in Paterson. Tickets are $5 per person or $20 per family and will be available at the door and in advance at the Dec. 7 Allendale Holiday Walk. Fell House Teas announced Two Afternoon Teas will be held at the John Fell House Tea Room, which is located within the historic home at 475 Franklin Turnpike in Allendale. Mayor Barra asked Allendale Police Chief George Scherb, who was present but did not speak, to prepare figures showing how scheduling shifts around either one or two new police officers might eliminate excessive overtime. Councilwoman White said that the request for bids for outside management of Allendale’s water department had produced a number of offers, and that the study would continue. She said the bids covered an extended range and that Allendale would probably have a candidate to negotiate with early in November.
