Disco Tech Ball slated Waldwick’s Crescent School will host its first basket and auction fundraiser, “Disco Tech Ball,” on Feb. 7, 2013 from 7 to 11 p.m. at Portobello Banquets in Oakland. In addition to the fundraising activities, the event will feature dinner and dancing. Tickets are $65 when purchased by Dec. 15. After that date, tickets will be $75 per person. Local bank supports WEF The Waldwick Education Foundation, in an effort to raise money for Waldwick’s public schools, is asking residents to link new or existing TD Bank accounts to WEF through the bank’s Affinity Program. There is no cost to any member. At the end of the year, TD Bank will make a donation to WEF based on the balance held by participating members. Club to discuss ‘The Gendarme’ The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “The Gendarme” by Mark Mustian on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7:15 p.m. Mustian’s debut novel is a meditation on memory in which the dreams of a former Turkish soldier contain the truth of his past. Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk. The club welcomes new members and drop-ins from Waldwick and surrounding towns. Film series features ill-fated love The Waldwick Public Library, located at 19 East Prospect Street, presents screenings of classic films from the 1930s, ‘40s, and ‘50s on Thursdays at 2 p.m. The theme for November is “Ill-Fated Love.” The schedule will include: Nov. 1, “The Strange Love of Martha Ivers” (1946); Nov. 8, “Humoresque” (1946); Nov. 15, “The Postman Always Rings Twice” (1946); and Nov. 29, “Love is a Many Splendored Thing” (1955). Student Activity Night set Municipal Alliance Activity Nights for students in grades five through eight are back. Students in grades six through eight are invited to attend on Friday, Nov. 2 from 8 to 10 p.m. The event, held at the middle school located at 155 Wyckoff Avenue, will feature a DJ, snacks and guest speaker, cyber safety expert Keith Dunn. Village School to host Open House The Village School in Waldwick will host an Open House on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at 100 West Prospect Street in Waldwick. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet with the faculty and staff, see the classrooms, and tour the school. Learn more about the benefits of Montessori education through the middle school years. Headless Horseman to haunt library
The Waldwick Public Library will host “Ichabod Crane, Washington Irving, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. Neill Hartley of the American Historical Theatre will present an interactive, one-man interpretation of Irving’s classic story of Ichabod Crane’s fateful encounter with the Headless Horseman. The program, followed by discussion about this 19th century author who also wrote Rip Van Winkle, will conclude with a dramatic reading. Hartley is a professional actor and serves on the faculty of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He has made previous appearances at the library in the roles of Sherlock Holmes, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, P.T. Barnum, and Charles Lindbergh. The program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Friends sell gourmet cakes and pies The Friends of the Waldwick Library will hold a gourmet dessert fundraiser for the holiday season. Gourmet cakes and pies from the Carousel Cakes Bakery are available at discount prices through the Friends’ holiday fundraiser. These specialty desserts retail for $40 in gourmet shops, but may be ordered through the Waldwick Library at $15 per pie and $17 per cake. tions include coconut custard, Toll House, pumpkin, pumpkin cheese, pecan, and various fruit pies. Order forms, a catalogue of desserts, and other details are available at the library circulation desk. The deadline for placing orders for the fundraiser is noon on Saturday, Nov. 10. Pickup is scheduled for Nov. 20. The Friends will host just one holiday fundraiser this year. Customers are encouraged to order extra desserts to freeze for Christmas. The Friends of the Waldwick Library organization raises funds to provide programs and services that are beyond the scope of the library’s annual operating budget.
