Borough marks National Fire Prevention Week
The Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department, in partnership with the Ho-Ho-Kus Ladies’ Fire Auxiliary, held its annual Open House at the firehouse as part of National Fire Prevention Week 2012. This local event provided unique, hands-on opportunities for kids to have fun while learning about fire safety. Activities included live fire hose target practice and an obstacle course, where children received tips on fire safety at each stage of the course. Children who completed the steps of the safety course earned a junior firefighter badge and ribbon. Safety education for adults included demonstrations on dousing a stovetop fire and the proper use of a home fire extinguisher. The firefighters also demonstrated their advanced capabilities using the hydraulic-powered “jaws of life” to extricate victims of serious car accidents. As always, firefighting coloring books and toy fire helmets were distributed. Sparky, the Ho-Ho-Kus Fire Department mascot, was on had for autographs and photos. Participants also enjoyed cider, doughnuts, popcorn, balloons, and rub-on tattoos. The Ho-Ho-Kus Fire Department has been fully staffed by volunteers since it was established in 1911.
