Waldwick
There was something for everyone at the formal dedication of the Waldwick Public Library’s expanded facility on Oct. 6, with public tours of the new meeting room and local history archives, a magic and comedy show by Stretch the Silly Man to a full house of children, a balloon sculptor, and a concert featuring the music of Buddy Holly. of the building, the fifth construction project in the library’s 56-year history, nearly doubled the size of the meeting room. That space was converted into a multi-purpose room to serve as a depository for local history materials, as well as a conference room and an area for quiet study. The multi-purpose room was rededicated in honor of the late George F. Fredricks, a 47-year trustee of the library whose

historical files and indexes are stored in the new space as a permanent part of the library collection, making it accessible to the entire community. As the borough’s historian, Fredericks shared his knowledge of local history with the staff and patrons of the library. He also initiated and managed, often at his own expense, many new programs, including the popular Armchair Traveler lecture series, photography contests, stamp collecting workshops, music appreciation programs, and historical exhibits displayed in his popular Nostalgia Corner. “This building is made of many bricks, but the mortar that holds it together is made up of people who love and care for all that enter this building, and we are forever grateful to all of them… Here in Waldwick we have always believed in our future .We have created a space for future generations to gather and promote their ideas in a setting that is both beautiful and useful,” said
Mayor Thomas Giordano. “May this library continue to serve our residents and be a home for the next generation of residents to enjoy and learn about our great history of who we are and what we stand for,” he added. The new area also displays memorabilia from the old railroad station now under renovation by the Waldwick Community Alliance; and historic photographs from the archives of the Italian-American Social Club of Waldwick. More than 800 patrons contributed to the $400,000 project, spearheaded by the Friends of the Waldwick Library. Seed money and inspiration came from the estate of J. David Kamykoski, the former library director who retired in 2001 after 25 years of service, who gave $100,000; Another $100,000 came from the Borough of Waldwick’s capital improvement fund, and the Waldwick Lions Club also made a sizable contribution.
