Scavenger Hunt/Food Drive set The Saddle River Valley Jewish Community Organization will hold its Fourth Annual Scavenger Hunt/Food Drive at the A&P in Allendale on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 3:45 p.m. Children ages five and up accompanied by an adult are invited to participate. The fee is $10 per child. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to benefit the Center for Food Action in Mahwah. Yeomans exhibits at Upper Saddle River Library Oils and watercolors by Bill Yeomans are on exhibit at the Upper Saddle River Library during the month of October. Yeomans has studied with Joel Popadics and Ed Broussard at the Ridgewood Art Institute and Denise Collins at the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center. Featured are his landscapes of Upper Saddle River, France, Italy, New England and Cape May.He has had exhibits in the local area at the Art Barn in Ridgewood, the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center, the Ramsey Library and the Upper Saddle River Library. Church hosts Holiday Boutique Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church located at 318 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River, will host a Holiday Boutique on Sunday, Nov. 4 from 1 to 5 p.m. The boutique will feature jewelry, chocolates, candles, cosmetics, and more. Complimentary dessert and coffee will be served while packages are gift wrapped. Proceeds from the event will benefit the church’s mission projects. For more information, call (201) 327-3960. Museum hosts Harvest Festival, Petting Zoo The Hopper-Goetschius House Museum in Upper Saddle Rive will hold a Harvest Festival & Petting Zoo on Sunday, Oct. 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. The day will feature a variety of activities, including a petting zoo with goats and
lambs, donkeys, ducks, chickens and bunnies, and pony rides. There will be demonstrations of colonial crafts such as spinning, chair caning, quilting, bobbin lace making, crocheting, and rug braiding. Attendees may watch the cider pressing in the old Dutch barn and enjoy the fresh cider, or taste a dish made over the open hearth fire according to a vintage recipe. There will be old-fashioned games and activities for children and a special area featuring several antiques and crafts and an opportunity to win a boat ride on Tuxedo Lake with wine and hors d’oeuvres. Grilled hot dogs and soda will be available for purchase. The event is free to museum members. There is a nominal charge for non-members. Children age 12 years and under will be admitted free. The museum and barn will be open for special tours during this event. The Hopper Goetschius House Museum is located at 363 East Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. ‘A Night of Broadway Stars’ set The Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River will host A Night of Broadway Stars on Oct. 19 at the Hilton Woodcliff Lake. The event will feature a pre-show cocktail reception with open bar and buffet, a performance by Broadway stars, and a Meet the Stars reception and dessert. This year, sponsorship opportunities are available for “100 Stars.” Sponsorships are available at the gold ($500), silver ($250), and bronze ($100) levels. Sponsors’ names will appear in the evening’s program book and will be featured on a star-shaped cutout that will be displayed at the event. Citizenship classes available The Friends of the Upper Saddle River Library will host a course to help eligible individuals prepare for the U.S. Citizenship test. The class, which will be held at the library during the fall, will prepare participants for sections of the exam: speaking, reading, writing, U.S. history, and government. Breast cancer survivors’ benefit set On Thursday, Oct. 18, Trudie’s Treasures in Ho-Ho-Kus will sponsor a shopping fundraiser to benefit breast cancer survivors at Pathways for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The shop will donate 20 percent of all purchases made on this day to the cancer survivors’ mentoring program. Wine and cheese will be served during the day. Story time program expanded The Worth-Pinkham Memorial Library, located at 91 Warren Avenue in Ho-Ho-Kus, has added a 3:15 p.m. Thursday session to its children’s story time program. This new story time will be held in addition to the programs scheduled on Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 11:45 a.m. The program is recommended for children ages three and up. New executive chef named Laurie and Gordon Hamm, proprietors of the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern, have announced that Andrew Rodriguez has been named executive chef. Rodriguez is a graduate of the Institute of Culinary Education and began his career at Avoce in New York City. Working under Chef Missy Robbins, who became his mentor, he worked at the Avoce Madison Avenue before being named to the team that opened the Avoce Columbus Avenue location. Under his culinary stewardship, the restaurant was highly rated and received the Michelin Star award. The Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern is located at One East Franklin Turnpike. Girl Scouts provide fall cleanup The Ho-Ho-Kus Girl Scouts will a host a one-day cleanup to assist senior citizens and shut-ins this fall. Property owners who wish to engage the volunteers’ services are encouraged to sign up for this event, which will be held Nov. 5. (Rain date: Nov. 6.) Services will include the collection and bagging of leaves, trash, debris, and recyclable materials. This assistance is available to borough residents, who must be home from 2 to 4 p.m. on Nov. 5. Seniors plan fall events Interior designer Suzanne Curtis will present “The Language of Color” to the Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors on Oct. 23. This demonstration will show how to bring color into the home. The seniors group meets in the Hermitage Education Building at 335 Franklin Turnpike. Beverages and desserts will be served at noon, and the program will begin at 1 p.m. Residents age 55 and up are welcome. Upcoming events include a trip to the Platzl Brauhaus in Pomona, New York for a Golden Oktoberfest on Oct. 24, an International Jamboree at the Fiesta on Nov. 13, and an outing to Hunterdon Hills on Dec. 3. The event, which will be held from 7 to 11 p.m., will feature music performed by the New Jersey Polka Band, beer sampling, German food, savories, and desserts catered by Market Basket, fundraisers, and door prizes.
