Citizenship classes available The Friends of the Upper Saddle River Library will host a course to help eligible individuals prepare for the U.S. Citizenship test. The class, which will be held at the library during the fall, will prepare participants for sections of the exam: speaking, reading, writing, U.S. history, and government. Directory tradition continues Producers of the Upper Saddle River Directory, a borough tradition for over 50 years, are seeking advertisers and residents who wish to be included in the 2013 edition. Published by the Friends of Upper Saddle River Library, the directory contains phone numbers of residents, important borough information, a street map, a professional section, and a dining guide. Board of education to meet The Upper Saddle River Board of Education will meet on Monday, Oct. 15. The meeting will be held at 8 p.m. in the media center at the Cavallini Middle School located at 392 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. ‘A Night of Broadway Stars’ set The Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River will host A Night of Broadway Stars on Oct. 19 at the Hilton Woodcliff Lake. The event will feature a pre-show cocktail reception with open bar and buffet, a performance by Broadway stars, and a Meet the Stars reception
and dessert. This year, sponsorship opportunities are available for “100 Stars.” Sponsorships are available at the gold ($500), silver ($250), and bronze ($100) levels. Sponsors’ names will appear in the evening’s program book and will be featured on a star-shaped cutout that will be displayed at the event. Proceeds from the event will benefit the parish’s community programs. Tickets to the fundraiser are $150, and are available on a first come basis. Social skills group forming A new young adult program for the special needs population is forming this fall at the Upper Saddle River Library. Co-sponsored by parents of special needs children from the community, the group will meet every other Monday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The next meeting is set for Oct. 15. The youngsters will socialize over games, discuss a favorite book, or simply have a place to form friendships and share experiences common to teens in grades eight through 12. Parents and caregivers are expected to attend with their child for the initial sessions. The program is open to residents of Bergen County. Church hosts ‘Acoustic Worship Service’ The Old Stone Church in Upper Saddle River has announced a new “Acoustic Worship Service” at 5 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month. The music is contemporary, folk, traditional, Gospel, and original. This season’s theme will be “Biography of Faith.” Everyone is invited to join with song leader Rebecca Abma, Pastor Bob Fretz, musicians, believers, and seekers of all ages. Upcoming services are planned for Oct. 13, Nov. 10, and Dec. 8.
Built in 1819, the Old Stone Church is an acoustic marvel located at 481 East Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. Club hosts Wine and Cheese Soiree The Saddle River Valley Residents Club will host a Sociable Supper on Oct. 13. Other upcoming events include: Oct. 16, morning coffee at the USR Library; and Oct. 20, a family event to Field Station: Dinosaurs in Secaucus. On Nov. 17, the annual holiday dinner dance, “Giving Thanks Holiday Ball,” will be held at The Brownstone. Information about all these events will be provided in a monthly newsletter. Other activities sponsored by the organization, which was previously known as the Saddle River Valley Newcomers Club, include a book club, Out to Lunch, golf, social suppers, and more. The ordinance would also prohibit donations for the duration of the contract. Mayor Vince Barra and the council approve of the stricter standards, and the ordinance is expected to be adopted. Pay-to-play restrictions became have become popular due to publicity over the high level of graft in New Jersey state and local politics. In other business, the council extended the life of certificates of occupancy to 60 days on homes that are being shown for sale. The 60-day period will begin once the CO is issued by the building inspector. Mayor Barra said several real estate professionals had concurred that this was a useful ordinance. The council also extended the deadline for bids for the oversight of Allendale’s water company from Oct. 4 to Oct. 11. Councilwoman Elizabeth White said that a request for proposals had brought in a number of bids and requests for more data. The council will evaluate these proposals to determine whether to contract for outside professional management of Allendale’s water company, a decision that has not yet been formalized. In addition, the council accepted a Community Development Block Grant of $33,150 to provide for two Americans with Disabilities Act automatic doors for the Allendale Bough Hall and Allendale Public Library and for ADA bathroom improvements in both buildings.

Blood Drive planned The Ho-Ho-Kus Blood Donors Association will hold an Oct. 11 Blood & Platelets Drive in conjunction with Community Blood Services. The drive will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall, 333 Warren Avenue. Donors will receive a gift. To schedule an appointment, call (201) 251-3703. All types of blood are needed especially types O- and O+. Any healthy individual age 17 through 75 and weighing at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Donors should eat a moderate meal before donating and must bring identification showing signature. All donors receive a complimentary cholesterol screening with every blood donation. Ruggiero offers fall gardening tips Michael Ruggiero will present “Great Plants for Fall and Winter Interest” to the Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club on Monday, Oct. 15. Ruggiero is an instructor at the New York Botanical Garden and the author of several gardening books. He was formerly the horticulturist at The Matterhorn Nursery in Spring Valley. The 7:30 p.m. meeting will be held at borough hall located at 333 Warren Avenue. Library trustees plan meeting The Worth-Pinkham Memorial Library Board of Trustees will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 15. The session will be held at the library, which is located at 91 Warren Avenue. Members of the public are welcome. Club plans Cabaret Night The Woman’s Club of Ho-Ho-Kus will host a Cabaret Night on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 70 Sheridan Avenue in Ho-Ho-Kus. The evening will feature the music of Steve Ross. Known as the “Prince of New York Cabaret,” Ross will entertain with the music of Cole Porter, Gershwin, Noel Coward, and more. Ross has a wide knowledge of popular American music and its history. He has hosted radio series and outdoor events. The event will include wine and cheese at 6 p.m. Entertainment will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. To purchase tickets, call (201) 652-2236.

(continued from page 12) in an orphanage in Haiti for one academic year. This year, the students coordinated an Italian Ice Sale with Clyde’s Homemade Italian Ice of Allendale and Garfield. This fundraiser was a big hit, and the students intend to continue their fundraising relationship with Clyde’s. On Nov. 2, Interact will participate in UN Day, as UN Rotarians from around the globe convene at the United Nations in New York to discuss their global projects and concerns. Separate from their adult Rotary counterparts, Roteractors (college age Roteract members), Interactors (high school age Interact members), Interact advisors, and Rotary Youth Exchange students will have an opportunity to learn about Rotary International’s projects and programs. Under the auspices of the local Rotary Club, Highlands students are also able to participate in the Rotary Youth Exchange’s short-term and long-term exchange programs. Through the exchange, one Highlands student recently visited Italy, and an Italian student visited New Jersey. In addition, students are eligible for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, a one-week leadership training camp offered to high school juniors. In the last two years, six Highlands students have been selected to attend RYLA through a coordinated sponsorship with the Allendale Saddle River Rotary Club and the Bergen Highlands Club. This spring, two local students received $1,000 scholarships from the Allendale Saddle River Rotary Club.
