Waldwick Mayor Giordano will help launch the festivities with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 6. New owners, Barbara Barrett and Craig Kirschner are committed to helping their members reach their fitness goals and making Odyssey a neighborhood fitness center while serving the needs of the Waldwick community. Club to discuss Ishiguro novel The Waldwick Library Book Club will host an Oct. 11 discussion of “When We Were Orphans” by Kazuo Ishiguro. The group will meet at 7:15 p.m. In this eerie, oddly beautiful tale by the internationally acclaimed author of “Remains of the Day,” a prominent English detective returns to Shanghai, the place of his birth, determined to rediscover the personal history taken from him 20 years earlier. Learn the ‘Story of the Broadway Musical’ Few musical forms are as distinctively American as the Broadway musical. Conductor and lecturer Robert W. Butts will present “From Shakespeare to Sunset Boulevard: The Story of the Broadway Musical” on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. at the Waldwick Public Library. Growing from plays with songs to full-blown musicals, the Broadway show emerged at the beginning of the 20th century with a vitality drawn from the spirit and talents of the lyricists, composers, and performers. It developed fully during a Golden Age of theatrical music led by the creative personalities of Rogers, Hammerstein, Lerner, Loewe, Kern, Porter, Gershwin, Bernstein, Webber, and Sondheim. The Broadway musical remains one of the world’s most popular musical formats, reflecting the styles, trends, and personalities of all who enter its exciting world. Butts is the founder and conductor of the Baroque Orchestra of North Jersey. He also serves as music director of the New Jersey Concert Opera, and conductor for Opera at Florham. He studied conducting with Vincent La Selva at Juilliard School of Music and Nahun Arman at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Maestro Butts received his musicological training from Montclair State University and the University of Iowa. He lectures frequently throughout New Jersey on a variety of musical topics. Classic Film Series to feature true stories The Waldwick Public Library, located at 19 East Prospect Street, presents screenings of classic films from the 1930s, ‘40s, and ‘50s on Thursdays at 2 p.m. The theme for October is “Based on a True Story.” The schedule of screenings is as follows: Oct. 11, “The Glenn Miller Story” (1954); Oct. 18, “I Want to Live!” (1958); and Oct. 25, “Ace in the Hole” (1951). Buddy Holly Tribute Band to perform Rave On! -- a band that features the music of Buddy Holly will perform at the Waldwick Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 2:30 p.m. Featuring Chris Roselle on guitar and lead vocals, Pete Farley on bass guitar, and Don Giunta on drums, the band will perform such hits as “That’ll Be the Day,” “Peggy Sue,” “Not Fade Away,” “Oh Boy,” “It’s So Easy,” and “Rave On,” along with other classic early The Waldwick Fire Department was selected this year to be a part of the ceremonies at the New Jersey State Fireman’s Association Convention in Wildwood last month and had the opportunity to meet Governor Christie, who thanked them for their dedicated service to their community and state. Holly was an American singer, composer, and electric guitarist who became famous in 1957 when his band, the Crickets, recorded “That’ll Be the Day.” Holly and his band developed an energetic style that combined elements of country music with a strong rock & roll rhythm. As one of the first major performers of rock music, Holly’s influence was far reaching. The Beatles took their name as a tribute to the Crickets. Holly died in an airplane crash near Mason City, Iowa at age 22. The concert is free and open to the public; however space is limited and advance registration is advised.
