Often, this form of amusement could be found in the many popular magazines of the day. At Christmastime, the publishers pulled out all the stops -- offering stories of the season and printing elaborate gift books with more stories and prolific illustrations. On Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m., the Waldwick Public Library will host professional actress Michèle LaRue. The performer will present a vibrant reading of two of these classic short stories: “Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry (1906), and “A Winter Courtship” by Sarah Orne Jewett (1890). Written to be read aloud, these stories delight the ear with their powerful verbs, evocative adjectives, and rich dialects. Despite the preponderance of television, films, the Internet, and special effects, we still crave to simply listen to a tale well told. LaRue is an Illinois native who currently a resident of Secaucus. She has performed often with New Jersey’s The East Lynne Company, founded by her late husband Warren Kliewer, to uniquely specialize in the performance of American plays of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was there that she began performing the short stories that became her series of Tales Well Told -- among them, Dorothy Canfield Fisher’s “The Bedquilt.” The program is free and open to the public; however, space is limited and advance registration is recommended. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Reldan, a handsome, personable charmer of the Ted Bundy mold, had an engaging, friendly smile that promised a charming personality and inspired trust. Over the next 20 years, that smile caused a dozen or more unsuspecting women to drop their guard and place themselves under the power of one of New Jersey’s most ruthless criminals.
