Club hosts holiday events The Saddle River Valley Residents Club, (formerly known as the Saddle River Valley Newcomers Club) will host “Giving Thanks Holiday Ball” on Saturday, Nov. 17. Annual Rabies Clinic coming up The Upper Saddle River Board of Health and the Northwest Bergen Regional Health Commission will hold a free Rabies Clinic on Monday, Nov. 19. The rabies vaccine will be administered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Saddle River Firehouse located at 375 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. Pets of residents from area municipalities are welcome to attend. Dogs on leashes are welcome from 6 to 7 p.m. Cats will be inoculated from 7 to 7:30 p.m. All dogs and cats must be accompanied by an adult and must be restrained on a leash or in a carrier; retractable leashes are not recommended. The vaccine will provide three-year immunity for cats and dogs 12 months of age and older who have been previously vaccinated. Cats and dogs ages three to 11 months and animals over one year old who have not received the vaccine will require re-vaccination in one year. The state health department encourages owners of animals whose vaccinations will expire in 2013 to have their pets vaccinated this year to ensure a good overlap in immunity. On Nov. 13, Sharon Crockett, a member of the board of directors at Manitoga, the Russel Wright Design Center, will speak about the former country retreat. Wright, the heralded 20th century industrial designer, conceived his house and studio with the philosophy that good design is for everyone, and people should strive to live harmoniously with nature. Ronnie O’Neill, author of “Everything Happens for a Reason,” will discuss her book on Thursday, Nov. 15. This Upper Saddle River resident will share her story of inner strength, courage, and the human spirit in surviving a brain aneurysm. O’Neill led a normal life with her family until she experienced this aneurysm, which few people survive. Her book will be available for sale at the presentation. Master Hypnotist Larry Greenberg will present a program on hypnosis on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Learn how hypnosis works and how it can be used in everyday life to make improvements and break bad habits. Young adults and adults are welcome. Lions Club recycles eyeglasses For more than 60 years, Lions clubs have been collecting used eyeglasses for recycling. Donated glasses are either given to support local eyeglass recycling efforts or shipped to one of seven official Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers. The Saddle River Valley Lions Club has placed “eyeglass collection boxes” through the club area. Gold and purple boxes with the Lions logo can be found at the following locations: Mahwah: Bank of America, Town Hall, Library and a drive up white box at 190 Franklin Turnpike; Ramsey: Town Hall, Library, Ramsey High School, Quality Optical (Main Street); Saddle River: Bank of America; and Upper Saddle River: Library. Free health consultations offered The Valley Hospital Community Health Department in conjunction with the Saddle River Board of Health will continue to conduct free adult health consultations for Saddle River residents on the first Wednesday of each month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at 10 Wolf Run, Saddle River. The sessions consist of blood pressure, pulse, and weight monitoring. Information including such health concerns as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and a review of medications will also be discussed. All services are provided by a registered nurse.
