In November of 2011, Weiss was due to run for the remainder of Crossley’s term, but a clerical error kept her name off the ballot. The council reappointed Weiss to the seat. Saddle River Saddle River’s voters will be asked to endorse GOP incumbents Bruce Walenczyk and Albert Kurpis. There is no contest for county committee in the borough. Walenczyk is currently serving as council president. The candidate and his wife, Elizabeth, have resided in Saddle River for seven years. With the exception of three years in Bethesda, Maryland, the Walenczyks have been life-long residents of Bergen County. The candidate was elected to a three-year term on the council in 2009. In addition to his service to the council, Walenczyk has been a member of the planning board and the zoning board of adjustment. Now retired, he had a 36-year business career that included service as a CFO and treasurer for various corporations. He holds an MBA in finance from Fairleigh Dickinson, and a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance from Saint John’s University. In the community, he is active with various clubs, including the Allendale/Saddle River Rotary Club and with the Knights of Columbus Council based at Saint Gabriel’s Church. Upper Saddle River Republicans Vincent Durante and Dr. Joanne Florio are seeking re-election to the Upper Saddle River Council. A borough resident since 1996, Durante has over 25 years of professional and managerial experience in pharmaceutical and health and beauty products. He is employed by Interchem Corp/World Gen in Paramus as senior vice president/secretary-treasurer. He is also a member of the board of directors of Steri-Pharma, LLC in Syracuse, New York. He was appointed to the USR Council in May 2009 and elected to office in November of that year. He is the council’s recreation liaison and public safety liaison. Durante is past chairman and current member of the Finance Committee. He is a past president of the Upper Saddle River Republican Club and has served as vice president of the Upper Saddle River Board of Health. He has also served as a commissioner for the Northwest Bergen Regional Health Commission. Durante has coached basketball for the Upper Saddle River Recreation Commission. He is also a former member and past chief of the Carlstadt Fire Department. He and his wife Kathleen have three children: Christian, 31; Danielle, 27; and Joseph, 16. Dr. Florio, a lifetime borough resident, has been a practicing chiropractor and nutritionist since 1988. Dr. Florio has served as a member of the local board of health and as president of Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club. She earned her Doctor of Chiropractic degree at New York Chiropractic College and holds a master’s degree in biology and clinical nutrition from the University of Bridgeport and a bachelor’s degree from Ramapo College of New Jersey. She is a Diplomate of the American Clinical Board on Nutrition and of the Chiropractic Board of Clinical Nutrition. Dr. Florio said she is dedicated to making local government more efficient, maintaining the character of Upper Saddle River, and representing residents of all ages. She has served on the council since January 2010, and is currently the council’s liaison to the Upper Saddle River Library Board. She is also the mayor’s representative to the Upper Saddle River Youth Guidance Council. In addition to serving as president of the USR Republican Club, Dr. Florio is vice chairman of the Alumni Advisory Board for the School of Theoretical and Applied Sciences at Ramapo College. Dr. Florio is involved in the Newcomers’ Club and the North Jersey Depression Glass Club. She is a volunteer at the Church of the Presentation, and has been featured as a guest nutritionist on Fox News, MSNBC, and Channel 5 News. Waldwick Both Democrats and Republicans have filed full slates for the three seats available on the borough council. Incumbent Councilman Charles Farricker and newcomer Anthony Celeste filed in the Republican primary for the two available three-year terms. Councilwoman Anita Bozzo did not seek reelection. Councilman Greg Bjork, appointed to the council in January to replace Thomas Giordano when he became mayor, will run for the one-year left on that term. In the Democratic primary, Richard Drury and Andrew Frey have filed for the two three-year terms. Allison Welker will seek the mayor’s unexpired term. Farricker has served on the council since 2006 and served as the liaison the the board of education and the chamber of commerce. He currently chairs the council’s Public Works Committee. He is a member of Saint Luke’s parish and served as a mentor to the youth group. He serves on the board of directors of the WBA, and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. Celeste, 22, expects to graduate from Ramapo College this summer. A lifelong Waldwick resident, he is a member of the Republican County Committee from District 2. He graduated from Bergen Catholic High School and then attended Bergen Community College before transferring to Ramapo to pursue a degree in history. He works as a clerk at Bottle King in Glen Rock and is exploring options to pursue either a law degree or a master’s in public policy after graduation. Bjork has been chairing buildings and grounds committee since his appointment to the council. An 18-year Waldwick resident, he was on the planning board before being appointed to the council and had previously served on the zoning board of adjustment. He has been a member of the Waldwick Lions Club for 15 years and has coached softball in the borough. He is the owner of Bjork’s Builders, Ltd. in Midland Park. Drury, a life-long borough resident and graduate of Waldwick High School, is manager of Prestige Lock in Waldwick. He has been a member of the Service Employees International Union for 25 years. He has been involved with the Waldwick Soccer Association for nine years, and has been a member of the Waldwick Soccer Board for six years. He is a member of the Waldwick Zoning Board of Adjustment, and served two years on the committee that produces the annual Waldwick Graduation Ball. Frey, 38, has lived in Waldwick since 2007. A former police officer, he is a fire inspector and arson investigator with the City of Hoboken and is a member of the Waldwick Volunteer Fire Department. He
is a graduate of Hudson Catholic Regional High School in Jersey City and is currently pursuing a degree in criminal justice at Bergen Community College. He hopes to attend law school and is an active member of the Waldwick Democratic Club. Welker, 36, is Executive Vice President
for Client Services with Advantage Sales & Marketing, Norwalk CT. She holds a degree from Ohio State in family relations and human development and an MBA in marketing from Cal State, in Long Beach, CA. She is a member of the Waldwick Woman’s Club and a part-time party planner.

Audition for ‘Zombie Prom’ On May 30, Tomfoolery Theatre Inc. will hold open auditions for its summer production of the off-beat musical comedy, “Zombie Prom!” Auditions will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. in the Guardian Angel Church Auditorium, 320 Franklin Turnpike in Allendale. Attendees are asked to prepare a short song to sing a cappella, or provide their own accompaniment, and be prepared to read from the script and learn a brief dance combination. The age range for this production is 18 through 35. Performances will be Aug. 3 through 5. All proceeds will benefit The ROSE Foundation of Haiti. CERT offers ‘hurricane prep’ The Allendale Community Emergency Response Team will conduct a “Hurricane Season Prep Information Session” on May 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Allendale Ambulance Corps Building, 26 Arcadia Road. The public is invited to learn how to prepare in the event of a hurricane. Knowing what actions need to be taken can reduce the effects of this type of disaster. Chamber offers ‘green’ fundraiser The Allendale Chamber of Commerce is offering residents a chance to save on their energy bills, raise money for the Chamber, and embrace a greener lifestyle. The Chamber has partnered with Viridian, an energy provider, to encourage consumer choice when purchasing electricity. With the deregulation of the electricity industry, consumers in north Jersey have the option to choose their electric supplier. Those who sign up with Viridian receive a 10 percent discount on the first month’s supply portion of their energy bills. Sign up under the Allendale Chamber’s campaign, and the Chamber will receive a contribution from Viridian to fund its programs.
