Civil War encampment slated The members of Company B, 2nd Rhode Island Volunteers, will stage a Civil War encampment on the grounds of the Hermitage National Historic Landmark, 335 North Franklin Turnpike in Ho-Ho-Kus, June 2 and 3 from 1 to 4 p.m. This Civil War group is based in Clifton, and regularly hosts re-enactments. Members of the unit will set up their outdoor living history encampment on the museum grounds, complete with soldiers’ tents and fire pits. There will be live firing demonstrations of military rifles and a mortar from the period. Museum visitors will be encouraged to ask the re-enactors questions about soldiers’ lives during the Civil War. There will also be special activities for children. The museum’s education center will feature indoor displays of Civil War artifacts, and engaging hands-on activities for families with children to learn more about this important era. Entry to the encampment will be included with the regular $7 museum admission charge. Museum members
and children under age six will be admitted free. Museum admission on those days also includes guided tours of the inside of the Hermitage. The Hermitage is one of the nation’s outstanding examples of domestic Gothic Revival architecture. The house incorporates a stone structure that was visited during the Revolutionary War by George Washington and was the site where Aaron Burr met and married Theodosia Prevost. The house’s architectural appearance dates to the 1847 remodeling and enlargement designed by the architect William H. Ranlett. Today, the historic house’s furnishings reflect the late Victorian lifestyle of the Rosencrantz family. The museum collection is notable for its historic clothing and for personal items and papers related to the Rosencrantzes, who owned and lived in the home from 1807 to 1970. The Friends of the Hermitage, Inc., a nonprofit membership organization, manages the Hermitage. For information, contact Friends of the Hermitage at (201) 445-8311 or www.thehermitage.org.
