Book groups announce meetings Two book discussion groups that meet at the Upper Saddle River Library, 245 Lake Street in Upper Saddle River, have announced their upcoming meetings. Coffee Talk will meet on May 17 to discuss “Wicked” by Jeremy Maguire. The group meets on the second Thursday of the month at 10:30 a.m. Novels at Night will discuss Nikolai Gogol’s “Dead Souls” on June 6 at 7:30 p.m. The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month. Gogol’s novel is available to download from BeAT or may be borrowed on a library eReader. This service is available to Upper Saddle River patrons only. Vacation Bible School goes under water Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church will bring an underwater adventure to Upper Saddle River with Operation Overboard: Dare to Go Deep with God. This interdenominational Christian Vacation Bible School program is open to all children age three years old through elementary school. The program will be held Aug. 13 through 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. Children will start each day singing along at the Choral Reef. Then they will enjoy crafts at Aquatic Arts, games at High Tide Hangout, Underwater Passage Bible stories, and an Exploration Station. Snacks will be provided at Diver’s Diner. A special age-appropriate program will be provided for preschoolers. The cost of the program is $30 for Bergen Highlands families, and $40 for all others through July 22, when the price will increase to $50. Space is limited and early registration is encouraged. Friends hold May Book Sale The Friends of the Upper Saddle River Library will hold its May Book Sale on May 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This sale of used books will feature fiction and non-fiction for every age group and reading taste, and a good selection of videos, audio books, CDs, and DVDs. Lions hold Annual Carnival The Saddle River Valley Lions Club Carnival will begin on Memorial Day, May 28, and continue through June 2 at Lions Park on Lake Street in Upper Saddle River. Rides and games will be available for all age groups. On May 28, the carnival will open from 4 to 10 p.m. Hours will be 7 to 10 p.m. from May 29 through June 2. At 10 p.m. on the last night of the carnival, the winner of 2012 Ford Mustang will be announced. Cleanup Day set The Upper Saddle River Recreation Commission will sponsor its annual Cleanup Day on Saturday, May 12 from 8 a.m. to noon. Participants are invited to check in at Lions Park for a cleanup assignment. Areas will include Lions Park, Hess Park, and school grounds. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Refreshments will be served. Individuals, families, and organizations are encouraged to lend a hand. Scouts, sports teams, and other youth groups are welcome. Please note that children must be supervised by an adult. Representatives from the Upper Saddle River Green Team will be on hand to promote “Make it Count,” the program that encourages residents to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Tickets are available at the USR Library, 245 Lake Street. Garden Club offers scholarship The Saddle River Garden Club will award an academic scholarship totaling $1,000 to a qualified applicant. In order to be eligible, a student must be a resident of northern Bergen County who plans to study environmental sciences, conservation, architectural design, horticulture, or botany. Scholarships offered The Knights of Columbus organization based at Church of the Presentation is now offering three $2,000 scholarships to the children and grandchildren of registered parishioners. Two college scholarships will be available to graduating high school seniors who plan to begin a four-year accredited college in the fall of 2012. One high school scholarship is available for students who are completing eighth grade and plan to attend a Catholic high school this fall. Although financial need is a major consideration, strong weight will also be given to grades, school activities, and community service. Applicants will be required to submit a short essay on one aspect of their community service along with an application form.
