Saddle River officials have asked the New Jersey Supreme Court to review a prior decision that resulted in a $5.25 million award to the owner of a vacant lot at East Allendale Avenue and West Saddle River Road. The town is questioning an earlier decision by Judge Robert Polifroni, who ruled that a variance was likely to have been granted to allow construction on the property. The owner of the property, 66 East Allendale, LLC, planned to build a bank on the lot, which was previously an Exxon station. The borough attempted to use eminent domain to turn the site into a park. An assessor indicated that the value of the site was $1.35 million. However, a lower court judge awarded $5.25 million to the owner of the property based on the possible variances that could be granted to use the land as a bank. The current property owner purchased the site in 2002, and the gas station continued to operate there for another three years, after which time it was razed. The land is located within two different zones, with approximately one third of the land in the office zone and the balance in the residential zone.

The Saddle River Branch of The Valley Hospital Auxiliary recently hosted a fundraiser at the Salvatore Ferragamo store at The Shops at Riverside that featured Emmy Award-winning actress Susan Lucci as the event’s special guest. A portion of sales made during the fundraiser were donated to the auxiliary’s pledge to raise $1.5 million for the expansion of The Valley Hospital Breast Surgery Program and to support Valley Home Care’s Butterflies Program for children with life-limiting or lifethreatening illnesses.
