Fishing Derby set The Upper Saddle Recreation Commission will host its Annual Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 5 at Liberty Park. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Upper Saddle River residents, ages five and older are invited to bring poles and bait and enjoy a great time. Bucky Rehain will be on hand to offer assistance to children during the derby and will answer questions about fish and wildlife. Prizes will be awarded. This year, the boy and girl who catch the largest fish will each receive a handmade fishing pole made by resident John Backos. Scholarships offered The Knights of Columbus organization based at Church of the Presentation is now offering three $2,000 scholarships to the children and grandchildren of registered parishioners. Two college scholarships will be available to graduating high school seniors who plan to begin a four-year accredited college in the fall of 2012. One high school scholarship is available for students who are completing eighth grade and plan to attend a Catholic high school this fall. Although financial need is a major consideration, strong weight will also be given to grades, school activities, and community service. Applicants will be required to submit a short essay on one aspect of their community service along with an application form. Applications are available in the parish office and online at www.churchofpresentation.org. All applicants must be able to interview locally if they are selected. Book group announces meeting Novels at Night will discuss Ann Patchett’s “State of Wonder” on May 2 at 7:30 p.m. This book group meets in the Upper Saddle River Library the first Wednesday of the month. Coffee Talk will meet on May 17 to discuss “Wicked” by Jeremy Maguire. The group meets on the second Thursday of the month at 10:30 a.m. Copies of the books are available at the library’s circulation desk. The library is located at 245 Lake Street. Friends to meet at Designer Showhouse The Friends of the Upper Saddle River Library will host a luncheon at the 2012 Designer Showhouse on Monday, May 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Tickets for the luncheon are $45 and include a self-guided tour of the 2012 Designer Showhouse, a buffet lunch, and a presentation by interior designer Jennifer McGee. A portion of the admission fee will benefit the John Theurer Cancer Center at HUMC and the Friends of the USR Library. Tickets are available at the USR Library, 245 Lake Street. The Lizzie’s Garden Sale will be held May 5 at Upper Saddle River’s Hopper-Goetschius House Museum. The sale will begin at 10 a.m. and last until the stock is sold out. This annual event will feature perennials and wildflowers, including an assortment of shade loving plants. The event will feature expert gardeners, a beekeeper, and information on eco-friendly gardening and composting. Proceeds from this sale will benefit the gardens and grounds at the museum.
