Girl Scout Gold Award winner receives recognition
by John Koster Elizabeth “Ellie” Hart, a sixth generation resident of Allendale, was recently honored by the borough’s governing body for the work she did to win her Girl Scout Gold Award. Hart scanned Pat Wardell’s 427-page “Allendale: Background of a Borough” for the edification of third graders at Allendale’s Hillside School in particular and for the community in general. After scanning the history book, which is currently out of print, Hart printed and bound a dozen copies for the Hillside School, the school library, and the municipal library. The third grade students study the history of Allendale as part of their curriculum. The Concerned Citizens of Allendale, who saved the John Fell House, supported Hart’s effort by adding the entire scanned version of the book to the John Fell House website. Students in the Allendale school system helped support the movement to acquire the John Fell House, fend off the bulldozers and the condominiums, and work to turn the Revolutionary War-era mansion on Franklin Turnpike into a borough resource and hometown museum. John Fell, a member of the Second Continental Congress, also worked for the ratification of the United States Constitution. Allendale Mayor Vince Barra said this history project is just the most recent of Hart’s many achievements in Girl Scouting that have benefited the entire borough. Hart is a junior at Northern Highlands Regional High School, ranks as an Ambassador Girl Scout, and has been in Scouting for 12 years.
