Knights offer scholarships The Saint Luke’s Knights of Columbus Council is offering four $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors who are planning to attend college in the fall of 2012. Applicants must live in Waldwick or HoHo-Kus, or be registered members of Saint Luke’s parish. The deadline for all applications is April 18. Scholarships are solely funded by the Knights’ Annual Golf Outing. Prospective applicants should visit their high school guidance department for an application, or contact Chuck Farricker at (201) 670-9040. Auxiliary offers scholarships The Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will offer two $750 scholarships for 2012. One will be awarded to a fire department member or immediate family member, and the second will be presented to a Ho-Ho-Kus resident who wishes to continue his or her education. Applications are available at the Ho-HoKus Borough Hall, the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School, the Ho-Ho-Kus Public Library, and Northern Highlands High School. Applications may also be accessed via the Ladies Auxiliary link on the hohokusfire.org website. Completed applications should be sent to the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, P.O. Bo 637, HoHo-Kus, NJ 07423. Applications must be postmarked by May 1. Finalists will be notified by mid-May to arrange an interview. Recipients will be notified by June 15. Church collects food, sets seder Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Ho-Ho-Kus is sponsoring its annual Easter Food Drive. Donations can be brought to the church at 70 Sheridan Avenue in HoHo-Kus on Saturday, March 31 or Sunday, April 1. The food will be delivered to the Ramapough Indians in Mahwah. Donations of canned meats, vegetables, fruit, pasta, tea, coffee, rolls and sugar would be appreciated.
On April 5, the church will host its annual Seder Supper at 6:30 p.m. in the parish hall. The menu includes roasted leg of lamb, bulgur wheat and vegetables. Desserts, wines and non-alcoholic beverages will also be served. There will be a Passover program following Judeo-Christian traditions. Guests of all faiths are welcome. A donation of $10 per adult and $5 per child is suggested. To make a reservation for the seder or for more information call (201) 444-5025. Garden Club scholarships available Applications for the Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club’s annual academic scholarship awards will be accepted until May 1. Applicants must be residents of Bergen County and enrolled students who are studying or planning to study environmental science or related fields, including horticulture and botany. There is no age limit; returning students are encouraged to apply. Scholarships of up to $1000 will be awarded. Established in memory of Nina McNamara and Charles Anderson, the scholarship fund is supported by the club’s annual plant sale.. For an application or further information, call Sharon Gomez (201) 444-9127 or e-mail to fsgomez@att.net Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary hosts Annual Beefsteak Dinner The Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will host its 4th Annual Beefsteak Dinner Fundraiser on Saturday, April 28 from 7:30 to 11 p.m. The event will be held at The Guardian Angel Church at 320 Franklin Turnpike. Guests will enjoy an all-you-can-eat beefsteak dinner from Nightingale Catering, as well as soda, coffee and dessert and dancing. Attendees may BYOB. Proceed from the dinner will benefit a local charity and the auxiliary’s scholarship fund. Reservations are $40 per person. To purchase tickets send a check made payable to

Scouts hold Food Drive, Pancake Breakfast Ho-Ho-Kus Cub Pack 54 will be distributing bags and flyers on March 24 and 25 for the Scouting for Food drive to benefit the Center for Food Action in Mahwah. Residents are asked to fill the bags with non-perishable food items and leave them in a visible location by 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 31. Cubs will pick up the bags before 11 a.m. On March 31, the troop will host its annual Pancake Breakfast at the Community Church of Ho-Ho-Kus at 400 Warren Avenue. Breakfast will be served from 8 to 11 a.m. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children under age 12. Scouting for Food donations will also be accepted at this event. Seniors host varied events Photographer and author Doug Goodell will present a slide show about Costa Rica to the Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors on Tuesday, March 27. Goodell’s new book, “Nature’s Paradise,” features the birds, wildlife, and exquisite beauty found in Costa Rica. On April 11, the group will travel to Ehrhardt’s Waterfront in Hawley, Pennsylvania, for its Tribute to Grand Ole Opry. The event includes the show and lunch. Nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist Jimmy Margulies will share stories of his favorite cartoons on Tuesday, April 24. On May 22, space historian Joe Lenox will present “One Small Step for Man, One Giant Leap for Mankind.” The Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors group meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month in the Hermitage Education Building at 335 Franklin Turnpike, Ho-Ho-Kus. Beverages and desserts are served at noon, and programs begin at 1 p.m. or as noted. Residents age 55 and up are welcome to attend. Contact Joan at (201) 444-4896 for program information.
