Michael Walter Kunisch
Allendale resident and owner of the Allendale Bar & Grill, Michael Walter Kunisch, died March 1 after a brief battle with cancer. Kunisch had owned and operated the Allendale Bar & Grill since 1967. Because of his dedication, AB&G became a Bergen County institution and led to the establishment of the Mahwah Bar & Grill and Manchester (Vermont) Bar & Grill. By example, Kunisch taught his children that a restaurant’s success is measured by its impact on the community. Kunisch and his wife Bobbie dedicated themselves to helping others, including family, friends, employees, and many charitable organizations. “Bobbie and Mike have been valued members of the Allendale Chamber of Commerce. Their contributions of time and energy to the Allendale Festival Day have helped make the day a huge success. They have chaired the Food Committee for the past several years,” said Allendale Chamber of Commerce President Nickie Lisella. “The Kunishes are a very generous family – not only with their time, but financially also. They were honored at the Colleen Giblin Foundation Dinner for their contribution to society; they received the Humanitarian Award. I was honored to be present that evening to see their wonderful family on stage receiving the award. Mike will be missed by our Chamber and the community, but his children will carry on his legacy.” Kunish grew up in Allendale, attending Brookside School and graduating from Ramsey High School in 1959. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Bobbie (nee Storms), his children Chris and wife Jean, Craig and wife Denise, Katie and husband Pete Ohnegian, and Kenny and wife Jamie.
