Patricia Herlong Koontz Maureen Sheehy Heavy traffic (continued from page 7) be closed for the duration of the project. She said the road closing should enable the construction crew to finish the work in less time than if the roads were open during nights and weekends and then closed during work hours, but she acknowledged that the closing of an important county road would be inconvenient. The county recently notified Allendale that the project would be subsidized immediately and that any attempt to postpone could mean that it would not be done at all. “We can’t stop. We can’t say it will be inconvenient. We just have to go,” White said. Another long-awaited project, the replacement of a culvert on Elm Street, is also possible but had not been confirmed at press time. Elm Street feeds off Franklin Turnpike, which runs perpendicular to West Crescent Avenue, so the impact on the road closing in the center of Allendale should be tangential. Plans for the Brookside Avenue and West Crescent Avenue bridge are now on hold. Mayor Barra noted that, despite the probability of a summer of annoying traffic due to two or possibly three big projects, the road repaving schedule for Allendale as a whole is proceeding gradually and steadily.
