June 27, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 13 Ho-Ho-Kus Council to consider policy for use of meeting space by Jennifer Crusco At the behest of the Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club, the borough council has agreed to review its guidelines for the use of the council chambers as a meeting room. Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club President Debbie Lovett, Vice President Lynda Byer, and several club members appeared at last week’s council work session to discuss the situation further. The club had been meeting in the ambulance corps training room, which had been open to various groups over the last decade. That room, which was recently renovated with donated funds, will no longer be open to local clubs and organizations. While the training room had been open to the public groups over the years, that arrangement sometimes left the corps members meeting in another area, rather than in their own room. After the last council meeting, Councilwoman Maryellen Lennon and Deborah Ferrara, the school superintendent, discussed the possibility of the garden club’s use of the public school. However, the club found that option too costly. For safety reasons, the district requires someone to be in the building to monitor outside groups’ use of the school. A custodian, or possibly Ferrara, would be required to remain in the building. Noting that the train station meeting space is too small for the club, Lovett asked the council, “Would you consider letting us use the council chambers for six meetings? This was the meeting room,” she added. Lovett summarized that the club wants to keep its costs low, maintain its Monday night meetings, and wants to be able to continue to host speakers, guests, and members of two other local gardening organizations. Mayor Thomas Randall told the gardeners that HoHo-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli had recently checked with other municipalities regarding the use of their council chambers.
