(continued from page 5) more before being promoted. “You can’t skip a rank,” Smith explained. Covered in great detail, the changes were mostly corrections of the existing bylaws. Fire Officer Smith reported that, at the time the bylaws were written, there had been a possibility of a second fire company, but since that possibility no longer appears likely, some grammatical changes are needed. Mayor Barra and the council members concurred with the concept of the changes and offered to have Allendale Borough Attorney David Bole go over the proposed editing of the bylaws. The proposed new ordinance, to be heard at a future meeting, would implement the residential standards for the Allendale Volunteer Fire Department. The council also tabled the adoption of an ordinance that would have simplified zoning regulations. The proposed ordinance would allow the construction code official to approve changes on any non-conforming structure to bring that structure into compliance, rather than bring the matter back before the entire board of adjustment. The change was not opposed, but is legally required to obtain an opinion from the Allendale Planning Board before the council can vote for adoption. The planning board did not have a chance to review the ordinance before last week’s council meeting. Adoption is anticipated on June 28.
