Board of education to meet The Allendale Board of Education will meet at 8 p.m. on June 25. The meeting will be held in Brookside School Auditorium at 100 Brookside Avenue and is open to the public. Advisory group seeks members The Allendale Council is seeking interested residents to participate on a Sewer Advisory Committee. The committee will examine issues relating to the borough’s sewer system, including the use of illegal sump pumps. Residents interested in joining the committee may e-mail GwenMcCarthy@allendalenj.gov. A meeting schedule will be determined after the committee is formed. Summer hours, special service set During July and August, Calvary Lutheran Church will hold Sunday morning worship services at 10 a.m. with Holy Communion being offered on the first and third Sundays of each month. On July 29 at 10 a.m., a special Service of Holy Communion will be held to bid farewell to Pastor Bruce W. Bassett Jr., who will be leaving Calvary after almost 15 years of ministry to the congregation and to the Allendale area. All are welcome to share in the ministry of Calvary Lutheran Church, which is located at 165 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale, across from Savini Restaurant. Rotary seeks host families The Allendale Saddle River Rotary Club is seeking local families in The Northern Highlands School District to host foreign exchange students for the 2012-13 academic year. The exchange students live with host families in under the sponsorship and supervision of the local host Rotary Club. They are screened and selected by their local Rotary
clubs. The candidates tend to be motivated students who have exhibited leadership qualities. Volunteers sought The volunteer nursing home outreach program, Growing Relationships and Making Memories, is seeking volunteers to form relationships with socially isolated nursing home residents. Many nursing home residents have no one to visit them. Similar to a Big Brother/Big Sister philosophy, GRAMM builds individual relationships through activities such as sharing stories, playing games, reading, watching sports/ television, sitting outside, writing letters, or just offering companionship. GRAMM is seeking volunteers who can visit one hour a week for eight weeks. The program is held at the Allendale Nursing Home in Allendale. Career development group offered The Allendale Clergy Association has formed a career development group called Opening Doors. The group provides a venue for peer support, networking, and practical job search resources for those who are in transition or seeking to rejoin the workforce. Opening Doors will provide resources for those who seek a communal face-to-face setting, and for those who would prefer to access them from home. Weekly meetings are held on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Highlands Presbyterian Church, at 270 Franklin Turnpike. All are welcome. The first Wednesday of each month begins with a specific career development topic such as self/career assessment, resume/cover letter writing, interviewing skills, and tutorials on networking sites. On-site WiFi will be available, and representatives from the business community and the Allendale clergy will be on hand at each meeting.
