Board of education candidates in the districts that switched their elections to November filed their nominating petitions by last week’s deadline. Allendale, Ho-HoKus, Saddle River, Upper Saddle River, Waldwick, and Northern Highlands board candidates will share the ballot with candidates for political office in the Nov. 6 general election. Allendale The Allendale K-8 district’s election will feature three candidates seeking two seats. Mark McAuliffe, an incumbent, will defend his seat for a new term on the Allendale K-8 Board of Education. Natalie Capano, who has been appointed to serve on the board, also filed for the November election. Sheila Yallowitz, a newcomer, will run as a challenger. Ho-Ho-Kus Two seats are available on the Ho-Ho-Kus Board of Education, where incumbent Mary Ellen Nye and newcomers Amy Langevin and Cinzia D’Iorio have filed. D’Iorio, a newcomer, has been an active participant in the K-8 school community. She is a past president of the Ho-Ho-Kus Education Foundation.
School board candidates file nominating petitions
Langevin, who ran for the board in 2011, holds a degree in accounting. She has been employed by KPMG, LLP in Montvale since 1995, and moved to Ho-Ho-Kus in 1999. Nye was appointed to the board in 2010, after trustee Robert Inglima tendered his resignation. She was elected to Inglima’s one-year unexpired term in 2011, and is now running for a full three-year term. The trustee grew up in Ho-Ho-Kus. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in economics and government from University of Virginia, she earned a JD from Fordham Law School and an LLM (master of law degree) from New York University. As a tax lawyer, Nye structured corporate transactions working with White & Case, LLC in New York City until 2002. Northern Highlands There are no contests in the Northern Highlands Regional High School District this year. James Mulanaphy, an incumbent, and Gail Link, a newcomer, have filed for the two seats for Allendale trustees. Peter Koski has filed for the one available seat from Upper Saddle River. Saddle River There will be four candidates running for the two avail-
able seats on the Saddle River Board of Education this year. Incumbents Rosemarie Arnold and Keith Pennell have filed for full three-year terms as have Jennifer Connolly and Elizabeth Weber. Upper Saddle River Five candidates have filed for the three, three-year terms on the Upper Saddle River Board of Education. In addition, two candidates will be seeking election to the one-year unexpired term left when Dr. Jill Stoller resigned. Candidates for the three-year seats include incumbents Marc Prisco and Katy Smiechowski, and newcomers David Verducci, Karen Fusaro, and Miriam Bakal. The candidates for the unexpired term will be Maria Bolton and Deanne DeFuccio. At press time, Bolton was due to be sworn in to the vacancy on Monday, June 11. The nominating petition she filed last week will allow her to compete with DeFuccio for election to the remainder of Dr. Stoller’s unexpired term. (See related story on page 9.)
