Cub Scouts welcome new members Registration is now open for the 2012-13 Upper Saddle River Cub Scout program. Boys who will be entering grades one through five are welcome to participate. Boys are divided into dens according to grade level. One evening a month, all dens gather for a pack meeting and activity. Families are included in pack events. Cub Scouts participate in an annual car wash, Pinewood Derby, Carnival Night, and fall and spring campouts. For more information, contact Tammy James at tamarajames1@verizon.net. Wrestling clinic set The Pascack Wrestling Clinic will be held at the Wandell School, 97 East Allendale Avenue in Saddle River, in two sessions: June 25 through 29, and July 7 through 12. Clinics will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Wrestlers ages seven through 15 are invited. National Wrestling Hall of Famer, Coach Bucky Rehain, will serve as director of the clinic. Book group to discuss Egan novel The Upper Saddle River Library’s Coffee Talk book group will discuss “A Visit from the Goon Squad” by Jennifer Egan on June 14. Coffee Talk meets the second Thursday of the month at 10:30 a.m. The novel is available to download from BeAT or may be borrowed on a library eReader. For additional information, contact Ricki at (201) 818-6643 or visit srvnc.org Club seeks recipes, treasures The Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club is compiling recipes for a high quality cookbook of favorite dishes from local kitchens and restaurants. Recipes for appetizers, soup & salad, signature drinks, entrées, side dishes, and desserts are needed. Submissions are limited to Saddle River Valley residents and must be received by June 30. The club is also collecting photos, anecdotes, and pieces of Saddle River Valley history to be included in the book. A “Title the Cookbook” contest is also under way. Vacation Bible School goes under water Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church will bring an underwater adventure to Upper Saddle River with Operation Overboard: Dare to Go Deep with God. This interdenominational Christian Vacation Bible School program is open to all children age three years old through elementary school. The program will be held Aug. 13 through 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. Children will start each day singing along at the Choral
Reef. Then they will enjoy crafts at Aquatic Arts, games at High Tide Hangout, Underwater Passage Bible stories, and an Exploration Station. Snacks will be provided at Diver’s Diner. A special age-appropriate program will be provided for preschoolers. The cost of the program is $30 for Bergen Highlands families, and $40 for all others through July 22, when the price will increase to $50. Space is limited and early registration is encouraged. Orlak, a 38-year borough resident, is seeking his third term on the board, where he chairs the curriculum and the technology committees. He is a graduate of Waldwick High School and the College of New Jersey, where he received a B.A. in history and secondary education. He received an M.Ed. in educational leadership from William Paterson University. He is district supervisor of instruction for social studies, business, health and physical education for the Pascack Valley Regional High School District. Gamma Sigma. He is a trustee of The Episcopal Diocese on Newark, and serves as co-warden of Trinity Episcopal Church in Allendale. He chairs the business advisory boards at Ramapo College and North Carolina A&T State University. Milano’s efforts have earned him numerous national awards, including Working Mother magazine’s Champion of Diversity, and the AICPA Special Recognition Award. Last year, he received the National Association of Black Accountants Legends Award. He holds honorary doctorates from North Carolina A&T State University and from Kent State University. Milano lives in Allendale with his wife, Dr. Sharon Pierson, and sons Matthew and Adam. Milano has four older children and six grandchildren. Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization, with more than 1.4 million members in over 180 countries. As the charitable arm of the association, Lions Club International Foundation acts as steward of the financial resources that are disbursed for humanitarian causes. The Saddle River Valley Lions Club, which is currently celebrating its 54th Anniversary, has raised and donated over $1,860,000 since its inception. The local club supports sight-related charities, answering Helen Keller’s plea to become “Knights for the Blind.” In addition to charities that serve the blind, the club also supports local civic organizations and youth programs in Mahwah, Ramsey, Saddle River, and Upper Saddle River and various educational programs. He introduced “All Wrapped Up” to the Lions. This program brings gifts to children in need. In 1996, he attended the International Lions Convention in Montreal, Canada. He has also taken on various responsibilities at the Lions Carnival, including running the food booth for several years. This former freelance insurance agent has kept busy since his retirement. He is a member of the Hobbyists Club in Ridgewood, plays golf, and travels extensively both internationally and within the United States.
