Allendale
The community recently rallied to launch Allendale’s first American Cancer Society Relay for Life, which will be coming to the borough in September. Guests at the rally were greeted by Dana Rago of Waldwick and Meghan Shute of Ramsey, Relay for Life co-chairs. Rally participants learned how their involvement in the nationwide movement benefits the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives. Proceeds will help people stay well and get well by finding cures. Cancer survivor Patty Murphy also spoke at the event. The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Allendale will be held at Crestwood Lake Park Sept. 28 through 29. Teachers and grants approved
The Allendale Board of Education has hired two new teachers, and accepted $39,649 from the Allendale Education Foundation. The foundation, which raises funds to cover the expenses of enrichment programs, funded the iPad Learning Lab taught by Jennifer Jacobsen at Hillside School for $17,721. The class for students in kindergarten through third grade. A $12,341 grant will fund the eighth grade program on 21st Century Science for the Classroom taught by Vincent Bednarz. A Theatre Week for students in grades one through three was funded for $2,700. Other grants included: Weather in Our Neighborhood for first graders taught by Laura Heitman, $2,007; Dinosaurs Rock for second graders, taught by Nancy Ashbury, $1,100; High Touch High Tech -Sounds Like Fun for second graders, taught by Jennifer Jacobsen, $880; and Rainforest Butterflies Program for second graders, taught by Jennifer Jacobsen, $900. In other business, the board appointed Lauren Shatkin as a fourth grade teacher at a salary of $51,575. Shatkin is now in a tenure track position. The board also appointed Maureen Bergin to a tenure track position. She will serve as a fourth grade teacher at a salary of $48,075. Both educators have been leave of absence replacement teachers. J.
