Bundle papers in stacks no more than eight inches high and leave them at the curb the night before the collection. Any papers put at the curb after 8 a.m. on Saturday may be missed. Students of the Month announced As part of the student recognition program at Waldwick High School and Waldwick Middle School, faculty members have selected the Students of the Month for December. High school students who were honored are Patricia McHugh for athletics, Katelyn Marsden for math, and Daniel Smith for vocal performance. The middle school students who received recognition are sixth graders Erik Dunn and Abby Dell’Aglio, seventh graders Matthew Monaco and Sabrina Garcia, and eighth graders Erik Neugebauer and Larissa Woods. Register for kindergarten, first grade Registration for the September 2012 kindergarten classes in Waldwick will be held Jan. 25 at 9 a.m. at the Julia A. Traphagen and Crescent schools. Parents or guardians must bring the child’s birth certificate or other proof of age and two documents proving residency. Acceptable residency documents include utility bills with the name and address, in addition to a lease, deed, or tax bill for the residence. To be eligible for next fall’s class, children must be five years old on or before Oct. 1, 2012, and must have a complete physical and eye examinations after Sept. 1, 2011, and have complete immunizations against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, rubella, rubeola, mumps, hepatitis B, and chickenpox. Parents or guardians must furnish a written record of the month, day, and year of all immunizations. All students will be screened in the spring. Registration forms are available at www.waldwick. k12.nj.us under each school’s website or may be picked up at Crescent and Traphagen schools during school hours. Anyone who cannot attend registration should call Crescent School at (201) 445-0690 or Traphagen School at (201) 445-0730 as soon as possible. Parents of private school kindergarten students who will be attending first grade in the Waldwick Public School District in September 2012 are also asked to register their children by Jan. 25. These students must meet the same immunization requirements as kindergarteners. Flu shots still available The Waldwick Health Department still has a limited amount of flu vaccine available. Anyone interested in receiving the vaccine may contact Public Health Nurse Carol Shepard at (201) 444-3914 for an appointment. Individuals must be at least 18 years of age to receive a flu vaccine. Residents must bring their Medicare Part B card in order to receive the vaccine at no cost. The Waldwick Health Department, through a contract with Northwest Bergen Regional Health Commission, will directly bill Medicare. A $25 fee will be charged to those who do not have Medicare Part B. Those who have a Medicare HMO, also known as Medicare Advantage, may choose to go to their primary care provider or pay $25 for a flu vaccination. Medicare HMOs will not be accepted at the flu program. Local artist to exhibit at library The art of Jennifer J. Shaw Merz, a longtime resident of Allendale, is on display at the Waldwick Library. The exhibit will remain open through Feb. 29. Merz is a children’s book writer and illustrator whose art encompasses cut-and-torn paper collage, oil painting, and pencil drawings. Featured in the exhibit are 20 pieces that reveal the artist’s fascination with the nature of the series: she presents tight pencil renderings of musical instruments (Etude Series), graphically depicted oil paintings of fruit (Fruit Series), and studies of furniture (Chair Series), also in oil. The artist holds a bachelor’s degree in studio art from Marymount College, and a master’s in art education from the College of New Rochelle. She is currently pursuing a master of fine arts in illustration from the Fashion Insti- tute of Technology in Manhattan. She is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, the Authors’ Guild, and the Graphic Artists’ Guild. Her books, “That Dancin’ Dolly” and “Playground Day,” are available through the Waldwick Public Library and other libraries in the Bergen County Cooperative Library System. Building Blocks to hold Beefsteak Fundraiser Building Blocks Child Center of Waldwick will host its Second Annual Beefsteak Fundraiser on Saturday, April 21 at 6 p.m. The event will be held in the school gym at 136 Wyckoff Avenue in Waldwick. Tickets are $40 per person and include entry, a beefsteak dinner with salad, french fries, beverage, ice cream, coffee, and a “starter kit” with prize tickets. Tickets will be available the first week of February. Donations of prizes and gift certificates from individuals and businesses are welcome.
