Chamber of Commerce seeks scholarship applicants The Allendale Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for its annual DECA Scholarship. The scholarship is open to Northern Highlands Regional High School seniors who have demonstrated exceptional talent in DECA and other marketing groups or organizations and intend to study of business or marketing at an institution of higher education. Applications, which are due by May 8, must be submitted as complete packets marked “Attention Scholarship Program” and mailed to: Allendale Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 144, Allendale, NJ 07401. The winner will receive an award of $1,000 that will be presented at the June membership meeting. The winner must be present. Lent and Holy Week services set Highlands Presbyterian Church will begin Lenten observances with the church’s traditional soup and bread suppers on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 6 p.m. On Ash Wednesday, a worship service will follow supper. Suppers will continue every Wednesday at 6 p.m. through March 28, followed by a video and discussion series. Those interested in attending are asked to bring a soup bowl and spoon and join the group. An offering will be taken up for the church’s mission treasury, which is used for local, national, and global ministries. The Holy Week schedule will include a seder on Maundy Thursday, April 5, at 6 p.m., a Good Friday service on April 6 at 8 p.m., and Easter Sunday services on April 8 at 9 and 11 a.m. Highlands Presbyterian Church is located at 270 Franklin Turnpike in Allendale. Weekly worship services are held Sunday mornings at 10 a.m., with child care and Sunday school provided for younger and older children, respectively. Calvary offers Ash Wednesday services Calvary Lutheran Church will distribute ashes from 6 to 7:30 a.m. on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22. A special service of Holy Communion with the Imposition of Ashes will be held at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome. Ash Wednesday begins the penitential season of Lent that is held 40 days prior to Easter. The period is one of reflection and repentance. In the early Christian Church, Lent was a preparatory time when new converts to the Christian Church studied and prepared for baptism. Fashion Show donations sought The Allendale Woman’s Club is seeking prize donations for its Fashion Fix Up fundraiser set for April 4 at Seasons in Washington Township. The show will benefit Rebuilding Together Bergen County and other local charities. Event organizers are now seeking donations of items needed to fill or complete prize baskets. Over the past 12 years, Rebuilding Together Bergen County has worked in 45 Bergen County towns and assisted 206 families including seniors, veterans, and the disabled. Rebuilding Together helps by assisting with repairs and renovations people would not have the means or ability

Integrated Preschool to host Open House The Allendale School District will continue to host IPS, an Integrated Preschool Program, in 2012-13. Parents interested in learning more about IPS may attend an Open House at Hillside School, 89 Hillside Avenue, on Tuesday, Feb. 28 from 1:15 to 2 p.m. There will be an opportunity to meet the staff and experience the classroom setting. IPS differs from other preschools in that it incorporates the education of general education preschoolers with preschoolers with special needs. The IPS teacher is certified in both general and special education. Students with special needs are placed in the program through an evaluation process performed by the Office of Special Services. The Allendale Public School District will offer two levels of IPS programming: a program for three-year-olds and a program for four-year-olds. All children must be toilet trained. The three-year-olds will meet from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Students must be three by Oct. 1, 2012. The program for four-year-olds will meet from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Students must be four by Oct. 1, 2012. All children in the program will attend five half-days per week. Class size is expected to be held at a maximum of 12 students per program. Tuition for general education children is $3,200 for the 10-month IPS program. Applications for general education students, which will be available after the Open
House, may be found at www.allendaleschoolsnj.com. Deadline for submission is 3 p.m. on March 23. Students will be determined by lottery if the number of applications exceeds the available spaces. Parents will be notified of acceptance into the IPS Programs by March 30. Transportation services are not provided to general education students. A birth certificate, copy of immunizations, a medical exam, and proof of Allendale residency will be required of those students admitted to the program. Please note that students enrolled in the threeyear-old program in 2012-13 will be offered first choice for enrollment in the four-yearold program in 2013-14. Relay for Life volunteers sought The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Allendale is seeking volunteers and participants for its event scheduled for Sept. 28 and 29 at Crestwood Lake. Volunteers are needed to staff committees and to assist with registration, participation, team recruitment, and sponsorships. The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is an overnight community celebration at which individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance, and take turns walking or running around a track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer. Relay for Life is held in more than 5,000 communities across the country. The event gives people a chance to remember loved ones lost as they fight against the disease.
