Announcement of the lower amount due was mailed Homestead rebate was paid as credit on tax bill to homeowners in December. β€œIt was a nice treat for a lot of people to find out before Christmas. It helped some people a great deal,” Tax Collector Mary Ann Viviani told the borough council last week. First quarter taxes were due Feb. 1. Viviani said that in total 1,066 residents qualified for the 2010 homestead benefit. Amounts ranged from $200 to a maximum of $1,000. To qualify for the homestead rebate, the gross income of homeowners age 65 or older and/or disabled must not exceed $150,000. For homeowners under age 65 and not disabled the threshold is $75,000 or less. Property taxes for 2010 must have been paid in full. Applications for the program are mailed by the state to previous recipients, or they may be picked up at town hall, Viviani said. They are usually available in April, she said. Viviani also said her office has been busy preparing post tax year statements for senior citizens who receive the $250 senior tax deduction. Senior residents who earn $10,000 a year or less must present the statement to the state by March 15 as proof they are entitled to the deduction. If the proof is not submitted, the $250 must be returned to the state.
