Winter Book Sale under way A Winter Book Sale is being held in the lobby of the Lee Memorial Library, 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale, during the month of February. All paperbacks are priced at five books for $1. The sale includes a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction books for adults and children, including many best-sellers, and volumes about history, science fiction, education, travel, and more. All books are being sold at bargain prices. The sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Allendale Library. Proceeds from the sale go directly to support the library and to purchase new books and other resources. Spring show supports Rebuilding Together Rebuilding Together Bergen County will be the primary beneficiary of the Allendale Woman’s Club’s spring fashion show fundraiser: Fashion Fix-Up. The popular annual event will take place April 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Seasons in Washington Township. The evening will feature a cocktail reception and gourmet dinner, gift basket giveaways, and fashions presented by BackSwing Sporty Boutique and Bliss Bridal Boutique and Special Occasion. Rebuilding Together Bergen County is a non-profit organization committed to providing critical repairs to the homes of low- income Americans, including senior citizens, veterans, the disabled and those displaced by natural disaster. As the primary beneficiary of the fundraiser, Rebuilding Together Bergen County will receive 50 percent of the proceeds, with the remaining funds to be designated to assist other local charities and organizations. AFEE plans annual fundraiser The Allendale Foundation for Educational Excellence will host its 17th Annual Auction fundraiser on Friday, March 9 at the Ridgewood Woman’s Club. This year’s
event, which has a “Hollywood Night of 1,000 Stars” theme, will include mystery board prizes, prize baskets, a cash prize contest, and an auction. All proceeds directly benefit enrichment programs and innovative technology for Allendale’s public schools. Tickets are $75 per person, and include dinner and beverages. For details, contact Nadira Khan at (862) 377-3708. AFEE Super Fundraiser tickets on sale The Allendale Foundation for Educational Excellence is selling tickets for its annual Super Fundraiser. Participants could win up to $25,000 in cash prizes. Only 500 tickets will be sold. First prize is 80 percent of the winning share; second prize is 16 percent; and third prize is four percent. Winners will be named at AFEE’s auction on March 9 and do not need to be present. Tickets are $100 each and may be purchased by mailing a check payable to AFEE to: AFEE, P.O. Register for baseball and softball Registration for Allendale Recreation’s baseball and softball programs will remain open thought Feb 15. Registration may be completed online at www.arcsports.org. Parents are encouraged to volunteer for coaching positions. Republican council candidates sought Two borough council seats will be available this year, and candidates for the June primary election are now being sought. Prospective candidates for the Allendale Borough Council may apply for the endorsement of the Allendale Republican Organization by contacting Bob Pash before Feb. 22. Interested candidates should provide a brief biography and statement as to their interest and qualifications for a council seat. The Allendale Republican Policy Committee is responsible for making recommendations for party endorsement of borough council candidates and for recommendations when vacancies arise. All applicants must be registered Republicans in order to be considered in the annual convention of the Allendale

Kindergarten Orientation set A Kindergarten Orientation for parents of children entering kindergarten in September 2012 will be held March 1 at 7 p.m. in the Hillside School all-purpose room, 89 Hillside Avenue. This program is designed to provide parents with an overview of the Hillside kindergarten program and curriculum. (Snow date: March 6.) Kindergarten registration will take place March 12 for pupils whose last names begin with A through M and March 13 for those with last names beginning with N through Z. Registration will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at Hillside School. (Snow date for registration will be March 19 for pupils whose last names begin with A through M and March 20 for pupils whose last names begin with N through Z.) Parents or guardians must bring proof of child’s birth, such as a birth or baptismal certificate or passport, a copy of the child’s immunization history, and proof of residency (copy of lease/contract, driver’s license, utility bill, etc.) to registration. Children may be enrolled if they are will be five years of age by Oct. 1 of the year they are enrolling in school. For children who will be six years of age or older as of Oct. 1, 2012, the building principal will schedule a kindergarten screening date, as per board of education policy. Based on the screening results, parents will be advised as to the placement of the child in either kindergarten or first grade. All children entering kindergarten must have a physical dated after Jan. 1, 2012 and all immunizations must be up to date as required by the State of New Jersey.
