The meeting will be held at 8 p.m. in the Brookside School Library located at 100 Broodside Avenue. Church sets Christmas services Highlands Presbyterian Church in Allendale will celebrate the season with several special events. The annual Christmas Pageant will be held during the 10 a.m. worship service on Dec. 23, the fourth Sunday of Advent. On Dec. 24, two Christmas Eve services will be celebrated: a children’s service at 4:30 p.m., and a candlelight service at 8 p.m. The candlelight service will be preceded by a musical celebration that will begin at 7:15 p.m. The church welcomes the community to join its services and programs. Holiday Observers keep traditions going This year, the Allendale Holiday Observers will continue its annual tradition of sending holiday gifts to military personnel. The group wishes to remind U.S. service men and women of the support they have at home, and is seeking the names of current or former borough residents who are now serving in the armed forces. Thrift Shop sets holiday hours The Clothes Line Thrift Shop at Archer United Methodist Church will offer a good selection of Christmas decorations and a wide array of holiday gifts through Dec. 21. The shop will be open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and selected Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. New or gently-used donations will be accepted during regular hours. The shop is located at 37 East Allendale Avenue in Allendale. Woman’s Club offers memorial scholarship The Allendale Woman’s Club will offer a memorial scholarship in honor of Linda Fleischauer, a dynamic woman who touched the lives of the club’s members through her love of visual arts and her compassionate, selfless nature. Applicants must be Allendale residents in their senior year of high school who are planning to attend an accredited college, university, or trade/technical school with an interest in the visual arts. Those who apply must also demonstrate their contributions to their community, work, or family. Students may obtain an application for the scholarship in their high school guidance office or at the club’s website: www.allendalewomansclub.org. Applications must be received by Jan. 31, 2013. Book Sale back in business The newly-renovated lobby at the Lee Memorial Library is complete and the ongoing Book Sale hosted by the Friends of the Library is back in business. The new shelves allow many more sale books to be displayed for easy browsing. Also featured is a special section for children’s books. Current best-sellers, fiction, nonfiction, paperbacks, children’s books, tapes, and videos are priced from 25 cents to $1. Volunteers sought The volunteer nursing home outreach program, Growing Relationships and Making Memories, is seeking volunteers to form relationships with socially isolated nursing home residents. Many nursing home residents have no one to visit them. Similar to a Big Brother/Big Sister philosophy, GRAMM builds individual relationships through activities such as sharing stories, playing games, reading, watching sports/television, sitting outside, writing letters, or just offering companionship. GRAMM is seeking volunteers who can visit one hour a week for eight weeks. The program is held at the Allendale Nursing Home in Allendale.
