The seven award-winning artists, Monique du Bois of Mahwah, Anna Fronte and Tanya Turchin of Oakland; Michelle Himes from Waldwick; Nan Michelmore of Palisades, New York; Lorrie Pallant of Spring Valley, New York; and Natalie Saunders of Kinnelon met over 10 years ago. To celebrate their continued friendship, they have joined to exhibit as a group. All of the artists have exhibited their paintings in various juried and solo shows in New Jersey and New York. They have studied painting at various art schools and with well known artists in workshops in New Jersey and other states. First Day Hike at NJBG set for January 1 The New Jersey Botanical Garden and Ringwood State Park invite everyone to start the New Year by attending a free First Day Hike at the New Jersey State Botanical Garden on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at 1 p.m. Join hike leaders from NJBG and the state park system for an easy, family-friendly walk to welcome 2013. This hike is great fun for all nature lovers ages six and up; younger children are welcome, but may need to be carried. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Wear warm, sturdy shoes and meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center. Ongoing snow or rain will cancel this event. First Day Hikes are held at state parks across the country to encourage visitors to enjoy their state parks all year, and to promote good health and exercise. The New Jersey State Botanical Garden at Skylands appears on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. Admission to the garden is always free. Parking is free in the fall, winter, and spring. NJBG/Skylands is located on Morris Road in Ring- Ramapo High School students welcomed young friends from Roberto Clemente Elementary School in Paterson last week for Ramapo’s annual Holiday Festival. Lecture series comes to Wyckoff The award-winning January Series of Calvin College is coming to Wyckoff. From Jan. 3 through 23, Cedar Hill Christian Reformed Church will be one of 38 remote webcast locations worldwide to broadcast one of the nation’s leading lecture and cultural arts series. The 26th Annual January Series will feature a lineup of nationally acclaimed speakers including three-time Emmy award-winning broadcaster Cokie Roberts, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Sheryl WuDunn, and the Army’s first active-duty blind officer Captain Scotty Smiley. Give the gift of laughter The Center for Innovative and Professional Learning at Ramapo College suggests the gift of laughter this holiday season. Community members are invited to purchase a Comedy Workshop as a gift for friends and family who are at least 18 years of age. The workshop will be held on six Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m., beginning Jan. 30 in the Ramapo College Anisfield School of Business, Seminar Room ASB-522. Workshop instructor Peggy Boyce will present the proven methods for making people laugh and how to create personal comedic routines from everyday life experiences. The workshop includes a combination of writing and performance exercises. Family and friends are invited to a final day performance. Workshop dates are: Jan. 30, Feb. 6, 13, and 27, and March 6.
