That calendar will recoup the lost days and make accommodations for potential snow days with the possible use of days from the April school break. At the recommendation of Superintendent Deborah Ferrara, the board agreed to designate Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 21, a half-day for students. The remainder of that day will be used as a professional development day that will include a discussion of the new teacher evaluation process. The district’s built-in snow days, which include April 1, May 24, and June 24, will also be used for instruction. Successful fundraiser The Ho-Ho-Kus Education Foundation recently held a Fall Harvest Wine Tasting at Bacari Grill. The foundation was pleased to donate 10 percent of all proceeds to a school in Moonachie that sustained major damage from Hurricane Sandy. Pictured are Nan Norbitz-Kelly, president; Chuck Russo of Carlo Russo’s Wine and Spirit World; and Deborah Ferrara, school superintendent. The use of those four days plus the two school days that were gained when the November teachers’ convention was cancelled, effectively make up for the six days lost to the superstorm. The board agreed to use June 25 and possibly June 26 as snow days, and to eat into the April vacation as needed should more than two snow closings become necessary. The April break is now scheduled for April 8 through 12. Ferrara noted that other area schools, including Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale, which accepts students from Ho-Ho-Kus, have already decided to remain open later in June to make up time lost to the storm.
