Waldwick December 12, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 The senior clerk position in the Waldwick Borough Clerk’s office will be replaced with a 20-hour employee, Borough Administrator Gary Kratz announced last week. Michele Colettis, who now fills the job, will be retiring at year’s end after 26 years working for the borough. Councilwoman Anita Bozzo asked how the clerk’s office would function with the reduced hours given that this year overtime in the clerk’s office had gone $1,000 over budget. Kratz said that the hours allocated to the position would be more closely monitored and should be adhered to, not over-utilized to produce a shortage. “I’m quite disturbed by this,” said Borough Clerk Paula Jaegge, asking that the borough council reconsider the administrator’s recommendation. “This leaves one person, myself. There is a lot of work, and it is time consuming. I know the work. Parts of the year are very busy. It’s a crazy, busy office,” she said. Councilman Frank Palladino said that in private industry employees are often pushed to do more. He said it was worth a try to reduce the hours, but said the decision might be revisited in the future. Councilman Greg Bjork said that if Jaegge was overwhelmed, or the service to the community was affected, it could be reconsidered. But Kratz reminded the council that when the governing body had made staff cuts in the finance office last year, the department head had just been asked to make adjustments to live within the budgetary constraints. “It’s not right to give an out. It’s a matter of giving a Clerk assistant’s position to become part-time directive to the department head,” Kratz said. In October, Jaegge urged the council to continue the full-time position, enumerating the various duties and the heavy workload, particularly when dog licenses are issued The oil and watercolor paintings of self-taught, professional artist Sal Calderone are on display at the Waldwick Public Library, where they will remain through Jan. 3. Featured in the exhibit are six vibrant paintings that include scenes from Amalfi Square in Italy, Goffle Brook Park in Hawthorne, and a self-portrait. Born in Montella, Italy, Calderone came to the United States in 1954 and settled in Paterson. In 1960, he was hired by the Hiemer Studio in Clifton, where he was trained as a stained glass artist. Some of the windows he worked on can be seen in local churches such as Saint Paul in Ramsey, Saint Philip in Clifton, Our Lady of Consolation in Wayne, and Saint Paul in Prospect Park. Calderone has regularly been selected for national juried shows and for many regional juried shows. He is a signature member of the North East Watercolor Society. His many awards include two Best in Show and four Grumbacher Gold Medallion awards. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Hours are weekdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or as a backup for vacations or medical absences. She said the position had proved valuable during the primary election, when Colettis had had to run the election because she was on medical leave.
