Pet license renewal to begin in January The Borough of Waldwick’s pet license renewal process will begin on Jan. 2, 2013. Applications should not be sent before this date as the borough cannot hold checks for more than a 24-hour period. Applications received before Jan. 2 will be returned. The fee is $16 for a spayed/neutered dog or cat, and $19 for an unaltered pet. Applications are available at www. waldwickpd.org under municipal forms. All licenses and tags will be mailed to the resident’s home. Open House scheduled The Friends of the Waldwick Library will host a Dec. 18 Open House to recognize and honor Waldwick Library Director Patty Boyd, who will retire this month after serving the community for over a decade. The Open House will be held at the library at 19 East Prospect Street from 7 to 9 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. There will be a brief program at approximately 7:45 p.m. One Box-One Soldier campaign held The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 57 in Waldwick is collecting supplies for its One Box-One Soldier program. In an effort to remind troops serving abroad that they are not forgotten, the auxiliary is collecting items to be shipped overseas. Winter items most urgently needed are hand and foot warmers, socks in dark colors, and AA batteries. Other items include small individually wrapped hard candies, cookies, and crackers, peanut butter and jelly in plastic bottles, drink powders, mouthwash, toothbrushes and toothpaste, disposable razors and shaving cream (nonaerosol), magazines, and puzzle books. A complete list of suggested supplies may be found at Walgreen’s stores in Waldwick, Wyckoff, Ramsey, and Oakland. Donations may be dropped off at the American Legion Post 57 located at 46 Franklin Turnpike in Waldwick after 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturday or after 1 p.m. on Sundays. Toys for Tots sought American Legion Post 57, in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps, is collecting new unwrapped toys for tots to teenagers. Toys may be dropped off at the American
Legion Post 57, 46 Franklin Turnpike in Waldwick, every evening after 5 p.m. or Sundays after 1 p.m. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 20. Foundation hosts golf benefit The Waldwick Education Foundation will host a Golf & Games fundraiser at Greenhouse Golf on Dec. 21. Attendees may play mini-golf, PGA Tour simulated golf, XBOX, Wii, and PS3 on Greenhouse Golf’s 11 foot by 17 foot screens from 1:30 to 4 p.m. This event will include contests and prizes. Tickets are $15 in advance, and may be purchased at Greenhouse Golf, 140 Hopper Avenue; Plaza Jewelers, 10 East Prospect Street; or at Waldwick’s public schools. Tickets purchased at the door will cost $18. Proceeds will benefit educational programs at Waldwick Public Schools. Book club to discuss Otsuka novel The Waldwick Library Book Club will discuss “When the Emperor Was Divine” by Julie Otsuka on Dec. 13 at 7:15 p.m. Inspired by her own family’s travails, Otsuka presents a psychological tale of the internment of thousands of innocent Japanese Americans during World War II. Copies of the book are available at the library’s circulation desk. The club welcomes members and drop-ins from Waldwick and surrounding towns. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street. Call (201) 652-5104. WCA announces Wine Tasting The Waldwick Community Alliance will hold its Annual Wine Tasting benefit on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Guardian Angel R.C. Church in Allendale. The event will feature over 100 wines, and craft beers, cheeses, hors d’oeuvres, gourmet chocolates, and prizes. The wine selection will be provided by Maratene’s Fine Wines and Spirits in Waldwick. Tickets are $45 per adult, and may be purchased at waldwickcommunityalliance.org or by calling (201) 873-8919. All of the proceeds and 20 percent of the wine sales from the event will benefit the train station restoration. The WCA is also offering tickets to its Dream Vacation Contest. Participants may purchase tickets at $20 each for an opportunity to win $3,000 toward a dream vacation anywhere in the world. Kindergarten registration announced Registration for the September 2013 full-day kindergarten program in Waldwick will be held Jan. 25 at 9 a.m. at Julia A. Traphagen School and at Crescent School. To be eligible for the September 2013 full-day kindergarten class, children must be five on or before Oct. 1, 2013. Parents or guardians must bring the following to registration: a child’s birth certificate or other proof of age, and two proofs of residency. Acceptable proofs include utility bills with name and address, and a lease, deed, or tax bill for the residence. Proof of a completed physical and eye exam after Sept. 1, 2012, and written documentation of the month, day, and year of all required immunizations must also be brought to registration. All those present voted in favor of the calendar adjustment. Hurricane Sandy hit the area on Oct. 29 and left the K-8 public school closed for six days. The widespread loss of electrical power, and many downed trees and power lines made for unsafe conditions throughout the state, and the lack of available gasoline became an issue for those who drive to work. Several local and out-of-state crews from Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas worked to restore power.
