December 5, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 31 Allendale Notebook Fire department collects for Toys for Tots The Allendale Fire Department is collecting toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program at the firehouse located at 1 Erie Plaza. Donations of unwrapped, new toys may be placed at the back of the military truck parked in the front of the station now through Dec. 15. Toys for Tots benefits needy children in the community. Board of education to meet The Allendale Board of Education will meet on Monday, Dec. 10. The 8 p.m. meeting will be held in the Brookside School Library located at 100 Brookside Avenue. Church announces Christmas services Highlands Presbyterian Church in Allendale will be celebrating the Advent Season with several special events. On Sunday, Dec. 16 there will be a Christmas Hymn Service celebrating the third Sunday of Advent. The annual Christmas Pageant will be held during the 10 a.m. worship service on Dec. 23, the fourth Sunday of Advent. On Dec. 24, two Christmas Eve services will be celebrated: a children’s service at 4:30 p.m., and a candlelight service at 8 p.m. The candlelight service will be preceded by a musical celebration that will begin at 7:15 p.m. The church welcomes the community to join its services and programs. Highlands Presbyterian Church is located at 270 Franklin Turnpike in Allendale. The church offers weekly worship services on Sundays at 10 a.m. Child care and Sunday school are provided for children. Community invited to Allendale Holiday Walk The members of the Allendale Chamber of Commerce extend an invitation to all Allendale residents to attend the Annual Chamber Holiday Walk on Friday, Dec. 7 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. During this event, West Allendale Avenue will be closed off beginning at 6:30 p.m. and transformed from a suburban main street into a festive promenade area brimming with holiday family activities. The evening will begin at the Lighting of the Tree in front of the Allendale Bar and Grill at 7 p.m. Afterward, local businesses and civic organizations will offer holiday cheer to all families strolling along West Allendale Avenue. Holiday music will be provided by school choruses. Local residents will also be singing and playing holiday music throughout the evening. Santa Claus will arrive at 7:15 p.m. He will be escorted by the Allendale Fire Department and Allendale Ambulance Corps to the Bank of America branch on Allendale Avenue. He will remain there until 9 p.m., greeting children, hearing their requests, and giving out candy canes contributed by the Allendale Bar and Grill and the Chamber of Commerce. Bank of America will have a drop-off bin available for donations of unwrapped new toys for the Toys for Tots program. Free parking for the Allendale Holiday Walk will be available in the New Jersey Transit parking lot across from the Allendale Train Station and next to the A&P Shopping Center. Holiday Observers keep traditions going This year, the Allendale Holiday Observers will continue its annual tradition of sending holiday gifts to military personnel. The group wishes to remind U.S. service men and women of the support they have at home, and is seeking the names of current or former borough residents who are now serving in the armed forces. On Saturday, Dec. 8, the Holiday Observers invite borough children from pre-K through age eight to meet with Santa. Santa will be at the Holiday Observers’ tree located in the town center near the railroad station. The 1 p.m. event will include Santa’s arrival on an Allendale fire truck, refreshments, the Northern Highlands Regional High School carolers, and gifts for the children. The organization will be collecting donations of nonperishable food items to benefit the Center for Food Action. In the event of inclement weather, the program will be held in Brookside School located at 100 Brookside Avenue in Allendale. Chamber plans dinner, elections The Allendale Chamber of Commerce will host a Dec. 11 Dinner Meeting at the Allendale Bar and Grill, 67 West Allendale Avenue, at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will include elections for next year’s officers. The museum is also currently featuring “New Jersey Fights in the Civil War: Remembering Soldiers Buried in Mahwah” and the Donald Cooper Model Railroad. The museum is open on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. and, until Christmas, on Friday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. The Mahwah Museum receives operating support from the New Jersey Historical Commission in the Department of State. The membership department of the Allendale Woman’s Club presented five new members for installation into the club. The club welcomed Meridith Desmond, MaryAnn Martin, Gail Cole, Cyndi Bennewitz, and Kathryn Bleckman. The AWC’s objective is to render service to the community as a group.
