Tree & Menorah Lighting set Waldwick’s Annual Tree and Menorah Lighting will be held on Friday, Dec. 7 in front of the library located at 19 East Prospect Street. The community will gather at 7 p.m. Waldwick Scouts will be on hand to sing carols and hang ornaments. The Waldwick Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, which is hosting the event, will serve refreshments in the firehouse following the ceremony. All are invited. Leaf collection update The Waldwick Department of Public Works is due to finish collecting leaves in District 1 this week and will begin round two of leaf pickup. The schedule will continue in Districts 2, 4, and 6. The DPW advises residents that it takes approximately three to four working days to complete a district. Foundation hosts golf benefit The Waldwick Education Foundation will host a Golf & Games fundraiser at Greenhouse Golf on Dec. 21. Attendees may play mini-golf, PGA Tour simulated golf, XBOX, Wii, and PS3 on Greenhouse Golf’s 11 foot by 17 foot screens from 1:30 to 4 p.m. This event will include contests and prizes. Tickets are $15 in advance, and may be purchased at Greenhouse Golf, 140 Hopper Avenue; Plaza Jewelers, 10 East Prospect Street; or at Waldwick’s public schools. Tickets purchased at the door will cost $18. Proceeds will benefit educational programs at Waldwick Public Schools. Lions host Christmas Party The Waldwick Lions Club will hold its annual Children’s Christmas Party on Sunday, Dec. 9 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Waldwick Administration Building located at 63 Franklin Turnpike. All children who reside in Waldwick are welcome to attend this event and meet Santa Claus. Register for kindergarten Registration for the September 2013 full-day kindergarten program in Waldwick Public Schools will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 9 a.m. at Julia A. Traphagen School and at Crescent School. To be eligible for the September 2013 full-day kindergarten class, children must
be five on or before Oct. 1, 2013. Parents or guardians must bring the following to registration: a child’s birth certificate or other proof of age, and two documents to prove residency. Acceptable proofs of residency include utility bills with name and address, and a lease, deed, or tax bill for the residence. Proof of a completed physical and eye examination after Sept. 1, 2012, and documentation of the month, day, and year of all required immunizations must also be brought to registration. Students entering full-day kindergarten will be screened in the spring. Registration forms are available on the district’s website, www.waldwick.k12. nj.us, under each school’s website. Forms may also be picked up at the school’s office during school hours, 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Anyone who cannot attend registration should call their school office: Traphagen School, (201) 445-0730 or Crescent School, (201) 445-0690 as early as possible. Parents of private school kindergarteners who are planning to attend Waldwick Public Schools for first grade in September 2013 are also asked to register their children by Jan. 25, 2013. Book club to discuss Otsuka novel The Waldwick Library Book Club will discuss “When the Emperor Was Divine” by Julie Otsuka on Thursday, Dec. 13 at 7:15 p.m. Inspired by her own family’s travails, Otsuka presents an exquisite psychological tale of the internment of tens of thousands of innocent Japanese Americans during World War II. Copies of the book are available at the library’s circulation desk. The book club welcomes new members and drop-ins from Waldwick and surrounding towns. Sports poster sponsors sought Waldwick High School’s athletic department is seeking community sponsors for its Sports Poster Program. Funds raised through the sale of the posters will benefit athletics at the Waldwick High. All American Sports Posters has been contracted to produce the posters. Toys for Tots sought American Legion Post 57, in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps, is collecting
new unwrapped toys for tots to teenagers. Toys may be dropped off at the American Legion Post 57, 46 Franklin Turnpike in Waldwick, every evening after 5 p.m. or Sundays after 1 p.m. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 20. is the owner of C&S Studio, located at 40 East Prospect Street in Waldwick, where he teaches art classes in every medium. Born in Montella, Italy, Calderone came to the United States in 1954 and settled in Paterson. In 1960, he was hired by the Hiemer Studio in Clifton, where he was trained as a stained glass artist. Some of the windows he worked on can be seen in local churches such as Saint Paul in Ramsey, Saint Philip in Clifton, Our Lady of Consolation in Wayne, Saint Paul in Prospect Park, and in many churches throughout the United States. Calderone has regularly been selected for national juried shows, including the North East Watercolor Society, Audubon Artists, Allied Artists of America, Hudson Valley Art Association, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, Rhode Island Watercolor Society, and for many regional juried shows. He is a signature member of the North East Watercolor Society. His many awards include two Best in Show and four Grumbacher Gold Medallion awards. His work was featured in the 1997 Grumbacher calendar. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. School hosts Art and Craft Bazaar The Village School will host an Art and Craft Bazaar on Thursday, Dec. 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the school located at 100 West Prospect Street in Waldwick. The evening will feature wine and cheese, music, and over 25 artists and artisans selling jewelry, origami, pottery, wood items, hand-painted items, photography, fashion design, knitwear, and more.
