Contemporary Club sets Kick-Off Party The Contemporary Club of Ho-Ho-Kus will host its annual Fall Kick-Off Party on Sunday, Sept. 16. This 1 p.m. event will be held at a club member’s home and will launch the 2012-13 club year. The club welcomes prospective members, guests, and former members to this friendly gathering. Master plan information sought Local residents are being asked for their assistance with the history element of the Ho-Ho-Kus Master Plan, which is now being updated. Planning Board Chairman and Borough Historian John Hanlon requests details about Ho-HoKus history and relevant photos. Members of the public who wish to contribute information about Ho-Ho-Kus history are invited to call borough hall at (201) 652-4400, extension 137, or visit historyplan@ho-ho-kusboro.com. ‘Treasures from Ho-Ho-Kus’ for sale The Contemporary Cub of Ho-Ho-Kus is offering its “Treasures from Ho-Ho-Kus” cookbook for $20. This edition is a revision of the 1975 “Ho-Ho-Kus Hostesses” cookbook. The updated version contains favorite recipes, some of which are over 100 years old, from residents, past and present U.S. Presidents, the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn, and the Hermitage. Seniors plan fall events The Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors will travel to Lakeside Manor in Hazlet to see the Happy Days String Band on Wednesday, Sept. 5. The band, which follows in the tradition of the Mummers, will play traditional instruments and feature costumed performers doing the “Philadelphia Strut.” For trip details, call Sue at (201) 444-7235. Upcoming plans for seniors include a presentation on Apollo 13 by space historian Joe Lennox on Sept. 25, and trips to the Platzl Brauhaus in Pomona, New York for an Oktoberfest on Oct. 24; the Fiesta on Nov. 13, and an outing to Hunterdon Hills on Dec. 3. The Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors group meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month in the Hermitage Education Building at 335 Franklin Turnpike. Library news The Worth Pinkham Memorial Library in Ho-Ho-Kus has announced patrons may now download books to their Kindle from home via www.beateaudio.org. Valid library cards are required. All instructions are on the website. The library has a number of language CDs, DVDs, and flash drives for patrons who wish to learn a new language. Programs for adults are available in English, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Latin, Chinese, and Italian. For children, there are programs in English, Korean, Japanese, Italian, German, Spanish, and French. The Muzzy BBC
language DVDs for children are available in Spanish, ESL, German, French, Chinese, and Italian. The library also has Muzzy Interactive Language, Games and Exercises on CD, in Spanish and French. Children may also borrow “Speak Spanish with Dora and Diego.” Soon to be available for borrowing will be “Shmoop,” a computer-based tutorial for the SAT, PSAT, ACT, or AP exams. Chamber to meet at studio The Ho-Ho-Kus Chamber of Commerce’s Sept. 11 meeting will be held at Haviland Photography at 22 Sheridan Avenue, Ho-Ho-Kus, at 6:15 p.m. Meetings are typically the second Tuesday evening of the month at 6:15 p.m. at the Ho-Ho-Kus Train Station, unless otherwise announced. Library website offers new programs The Worth-Pinkham Memorial Library in Ho-Ho-Kus website offers Job and Career Accelerator to help with the job search process. In addition, new E-books are added monthly to the library’s collection for Nooks, iPads, iBooks, and other E-readers. The site offers links to the New York Times Best-Seller List, BCCLS, the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus website, the HoHo-Kus Public School, and reference resources. There is also information on managing borrowing from home with a valid library card, children’s programs, and new books that the library has recently acquired.
