August 22, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 23 Ho-Ho-Kus Jottings Chamber to meet at studio The Ho-Ho-Kus Chamber of Commerce’s Sept. 11 meeting will be held at Haviland Photography at 22 Sheridan Avenue, Ho-Ho-Kus, at 6:15 p.m. Meetings are typically the second Tuesday evening of the month at 6:15 p.m. at the Ho-Ho-Kus Train Station, unless otherwise announced. Seniors plan fall events The Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors will travel to Lakeside Manor in Hazlet to see the Happy Days String Band on Wednesday, Sept. 5. The band, which follows in the tradition of the Mummers, will play traditional instruments and feature costumed performers doing the “Philadelphia Strut.” For trip details, call Sue at (201) 444-7235. Upcoming plans for seniors include a presentation on Apollo 13 by space historian Joe Lennox on Sept. 25, and trips to the Platzl Brauhaus in Pomona, New York for an Oktoberfest on Oct. 24, a trip to the Fiesta on Nov. 13, and an outing to Hunterdon Hills on Dec. 3. The Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors group meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month in the Hermitage Education Building at 335 Franklin Turnpike. Beverages and desserts are served at noon, and programs begin at 1 p.m. or as noted. Residents age 55 and up are welcome to attend. Contact Joan at (201) 444-4896 for program details. ‘Treasures from Ho-Ho-Kus’ for sale The Contemporary Cub of Ho-Ho-Kus is offering its “Treasures from Ho-Ho-Kus” cookbook for $20. This edition is a revision of the 1975 “Ho-Ho-Kus Hostesses” cookbook. The updated version contains favorite recipes, some of which are over 100 years old, from residents, past and present U.S. Presidents, the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn, and the Hermitage. Local students honored The following students have been named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2012 semester: Mina A. Assad and Julie A. Collins, Ramapo College; Christopher M. Council to meet this week The Ho-Ho-Kus Council will hold one combination work/public session in August. The meeting will be held on Aug. 21 at 8 p.m. Sessions are held at Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall, 333 Warren Avenue, Ho-Ho-Kus. Library news The Worth Pinkham Memorial Library in Ho-Ho-Kus has announced patrons may now download books to their Kindle from home via www.beateaudio.org. Valid library cards are required. All instructions are on the website. The library has a number of language CDs, DVDs, and flash drives for patrons who wish to learn a new language. Programs for adults are available in English, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Latin, Chinese, and Italian. For children, there are programs in English, Korean, Japanese, Italian, German, Spanish, and French. The Muzzy BBC language DVDs for children are available in Spanish, ESL, German, French, Chinese, and Italian. The library also has Muzzy Interactive Language, Games and Exercises on CD, in Spanish and French. Children may also borrow “Speak Spanish with Dora and Diego.” Soon to be available for borrowing will be “Shmoop,” a computer-based tutorial for the SAT, PSAT, ACT, or AP exams. Police offer announcements via Twitter The Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department is now featuring special announcements that will be available to the public via Twitter. The link to Twitter may be found on the department’s website, www.ho-ho-kuspolice.com. Messages will cover various non-emergency situations, such as road closings and delayed school openings. Emergency information and other situations that affect the community will still be disseminated via Reverse 911. ‘Hymn Sings’ open to public Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church invites the public to its Hymn Sing every Thursday from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the church located at 70 Sheridan Avenue in Ho-Ho-Kus. Library accepts exhibits The Worth-Pinkham Memorial Library, 91 Warren Avenue, Ho-Ho-Kus, wants to hear from area residents who want to display their original artwork or interesting collections. VFW welcomes new members The Ho-Ho-Kus VFW Post 192, which serves Ho-HoKus and Ridgewood, welcomes new members.
