Price will be on display at the Waldwick Library through Aug. 31. The exhibit, “Hometown Heroes,” is a tribute to the men and women who designed, tested, and built aircraft near Price’s hometown of Hicksville, Long Island, New York. All of the models on display represent aircraft built by either Grumman Aircraft Engineering in Bethpage or Republic Aviation in Farmingdale, both in New York. Price grew up just a mile from Grumman’s Bethpage plant and, as a teenager, saw several of the aircraft represented in the exhibit (EA-6B Prowler, 2-SE Tracker, E-2C Hawkeye) fly in and out of the airfield. On one memorable occasion, he was able to sit in the pilot’s seat of an A-6E Intruder. Republic Aviation, based in Farmingdale, was located just a few miles east of Bethpage. The rugged P-47 was designed and initially built there. Long Island figured prominently in the development of early aviation. Charles Lindberg started his 1927 transAtlantic flight from Roosevelt Field in Westbury, Long Island. Floyd Bennett Field in the Rockaways was one of the first commercial aviation airports. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call (201) 652-5104.
