Governor appoints borough man to bi-state commission
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has appointed Roy Ostrom of Upper Saddle River to the RocklandBergen Bi-state River Commission. The announcement was made last week. “Governor Christie signed legislation in January creating the 18-member Rockland-Bergen Bi-state River Commission to coordinate management and flood prevention of waterways flowing between Bergen County, New Jersey and Rockland County, New York. Similar legislation is currently pending the New York Legislature. If the measure passes and is signed by Governor Cuomo, Mr. Ostrom, along with other New Jersey members -- four additional public members, the commissioners of both the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Transportation, and the Bergen County Executive -- will develop a comprehensive bistate approach to lowering potential flood hazards along the two state’s waterways,” Governor Christie’s Deputy Press Secretary Sean L. Conner explained. Ostrom is a professional engineer who is licensed in New Jersey and New York. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a master’s degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from New York University. He is the author of “How to Stop Global Warming.” During his career, Ostrom has served as a consultant to the Republic of Georgia for replacing gasoline with solar hydrogen. He has also been a consultant to the country of Jordan for replacing gasoline with solar hydrogen, and a consultant to Con Edison & Covanta for energy equipment. Ostrom has also been an engineering manager for a $4 billion coal gasification plant in North Dakota, a plastics plant, and over 100 additional plants including refineries and fuel oil terminals. As Governor Christie announced Ostrom’s appointment, he also noted his direct appointments of several members of the Interagency Homelessness. Seniors to see ‘Jonah’ The Seniors Club of the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River will visit the Sound and Sight Millennium Theatre in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on Oct. 7 to see the musical “Jonah.” Following the show, the group will enjoy a family-style Amish dinner at the Hershey Farm Restaurant. The group will leave at 8:30 a.m. from the Church of the Presentation, 271 West Saddle River Road. The return time will be approximately 10 p.m. The cost is $102. Payment must be received by Aug. 17. Boys who will be entering grades one through five are welcome to participate. Boys are divided into dens according to grade level. One evening a month, all dens gather for a pack meeting and activity. Families are included in pack events. VBS goes under water Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church will bring an underwater adventure to Upper Saddle River with Operation Overboard: Dare to Go Deep with God. This interdenominational Christian Vacation Bible School program is open to all children age three years old through elementary school. The program will be held Aug. 13 through 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. Children will start each day singing along at the Choral Reef. Then they will enjoy crafts at Aquatic Arts, games at High Tide Hangout, Underwater Passage Bible stories, and an Exploration Station. Snacks will be provided at Diver’s Diner. A special age-appropriate program will be provided for preschoolers. The cost of the program is $30 for Bergen Highlands families, and $40 for all others through July 22, when the price will increase to $50. Space is limited and early registration is encouraged. Registration for pre-school under way Bergen Highlands Pre-school is accepting applications for its September classes for three- and four-yearolds. The program features small classes and utilizes the Land of the Letter People, a learning program that guides children through literacy development. Children participate in hands-on learning, mathematical reasoning, scientific discovery, physical activities, social interaction, and constructive play. The curriculum includes enrichment through Spanish, cooking, music, monthly visits to the Upper Saddle River Library, the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center, and seasonal field trips.
