(continued from Restaurant page) dramas and comedies. “The Cross of Lorraine” (1943) traces the story of several French civilians who become World War II soldiers. The group is captured by Nazi troops and sent to a military prison after the occupation of France. Kelly plays Victor, whose will to fight is crushed by the torment of solitary confinement. He is inspired when he witnesses the courage of resistance partisans in combat against Nazi troops. Co-starring are Jean Pierre Aumont, Cedric Hardwicke, Peter Lorre, and Hume Cronyn. “Black Hand” (1950), made 22 years before “The Godfather,” is a dark look at the power of the Mafia in early 20th century New York. Johnny Columbo was just a boy in 1900 when a gang of extortionists known as the Black Hand murdered his father. Now, Johnny (Kelly) is a grown man eager for vengeance. He intends to draw upon his pent-up anger and switchblade to exact revenge, but eventually decides there is a better way. He can use the legal system to deport Black Hand terrorists by proving they are in the United States under false identities. Kelly produced, directed, and starred in “The Happy Road” (1956), a family comedy about two single parents who team up to pursue their respective children, runaways from a posh Swiss boarding school. After numerous mix-ups, the parents find their offspring and romance. Michael Redgrave cameos as a NATO officer whose troops join the search. “The Happy Road” was filmed on location in Paris and boasts some beautiful cinematography. “The Liquidator” (Millennium Entertainment) focuses on ex-special forces soldier, Arsen, whose life changes dramatically after the untimely death of his brother. He discovers that those responsible for his brother’s death are involved in a ring of corruption extending to the highest levels of society and government. Arsen’s thirst for revenge is quenched as he begins to hunt down and liquidate those responsible for the murder. His trail of death is noticed by a secret organization recruiting highly skilled vigilantes, and Arsen joins them as a soldier for an invisible front. As the liquidation continues, the powerful individuals involved become uneasy and hire an international assassin known as the Silent Killer (Vinnie Jones) to neutralize him, compromising Arsen’s strength to complete his mission and avenge his brother’s death. The sole extra on this DVD release is a making-of featurette.
