Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • August 1, 2012 Waldwick Long-time Waldwick Library Director Patty Boyd is concentrating on tying up loose ends as she prepares for her retirement at the end of this year. “I’m very determined to get this renovation project finished and open the local history room,” Boyd said of the library addition and renovation project that is now in the hands of the bonding company. “I’m gathering historical items from residents, and an archivist will be coming in to show us how to preserve our collection.” Boyd said she is hoping for an early fall completion of the construction project, which will also provide the library with more space for special programs. “There is still a lot to be done,” she said. “I would like to see the library operating at full capacity by the time I leave.” The director announced her retirement earlier this summer, but plans to remain in her current position until Dec. 31. By the time she is ready to leave Waldwick, Boyd will have been the library’s director for 11 years. Boyd reported that she and her husband will be moving to Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. This Chester County town was made famous by three generations of the Wyeth family. She explained that she has lived in Chadds Ford twice before, and will be closer to her extended family in the historic stone farmhouse she plans to purchase. Although she has resided in Saddle River for the last 18 years, Boyd has moved many times as she kept pace with her father’s military career, and later with her husband’s career in publishing. Originally from Holyoke, Massachusetts, Boyd spent several years in Washington, D.C. She Director ties up loose ends before retirement later spent six years in Paris, France, while her father worked with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. She has also made her home in Chicago, Los Angeles, and in Charleston, South Carolina. After she graduated from Bishop England High School in Charleston, Boyd earned her undergraduate degree in English from University of Delaware. She decided to commit to library school while working in circulation services at the Chester County Library in Pennsylvania. “It was a very busy library,” Boyd said of the Chester County venue. “We had almost 2,000 patrons a day.” By comparison, Waldwick Library welcomes approximately 10,000 patrons each month. Boyd said the Chester County Library was located near a mall, and many patrons combined their shopping trips with stops at the library. Ultimately, she pursued the American Library Association-accredited program for library science offered by Rutgers University. While she was working toward her master of library science degree, Boyd worked at the Waldwick Library. During the 18-month course of study, Boyd enjoyed audio books during her commutes. She would also record her professors’ lectures and listen to them in the car to pass the time productively. After receiving her MLS, Boyd became a reference librarian in the Washington Township Library in Bergen County. She later became assistant director at that library, which she served for a total of five years before she was hired in Waldwick. “I feel very sad about leaving my job,” Boyd said. “The community is wonderful (continued on page 19) Productive partnership This new multi-use scoreboard was recently installed on the Waldwick High School’s lower field.
