Learn about America’s hunger crisis On Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m., the Justice and Peace Ministry of the Church of the Presentation, 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River, will host a panel discussion on the growing crisis of hunger and food insecurity in the United States. The program will focus on the problem in local New Jersey and New York communities. Panel participants will include Adele LaTourette, program director of the New Jersey Anti-Hunger Coalition (a program of the Center for Food Action); Susan Meyer, director of the Sloatsburg United Methodist Church Food Pantry; and Denise Vollkomner, executive director of the Social Service Association of Ridgewood and Vicinity. In 2010, it was estimated that 48.8 million Americans lived in a food insecure household, including one out of every four children. The number of people living in the suburbs who do not have nutritional food on a consistent basis has steadily increased, especially during these economically challenging times. Feeding America in its 2009 Map the Meal Gap statistics indicate that 17 percent of children in Bergen County live in a food insecure household. In Rockland County, that number is estimated at 20.3 percent. Seniors citizens, like children, have been especially vulnerable to this alarming trend as food pantries and other social service organizations struggle to keep up with the demand. This event is free and open to the community. Town Night Out gala set On Saturday, April 21, the Upper Saddle River Educational Foundation will host its ninth “Town Night Out” at Greenbaum Interiors in Historic Paterson at 7 p.m. This year, the USREF will present Mayor Joanne Minichetti with the foundation’s Award for Educational Excellence. The community is invited to this “Ultimate House Party,” which will include food and beverages, jazz, dancing, and fabulous auctions. Valet parking and bus transportation will be available. To purchase a ticket, visit USREF. net. Contact Karen Hanson at (201) 934-0986 for additional information. Proceeds from Town Night Out support grants that allow teachers to implement creative and educational curriculumbased programs for students in kindergarten through grade eight, and cover the cost of exceptional educational tools such as Smart Boards. Church hosts ‘Green Fair’ The Church of the Presentation, located at 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River, will hold its Third Annual Green Fair on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will be held in the church’s Community Room. Exhibits will cover composting, carbon footprints, Master Gardeners, birders, Bergen County Clean Communities representatives, a “Green Elephant Sale,” and more.
