Church seeks ‘treasures’ The Waldwick United Methodist Church is seeking donations for its Attic Treasure Sale, which will be held April 27 and 28. All types of items are needed. Building Blocks to hold Beefsteak Fundraiser Building Blocks Child Center of Waldwick will host its Second Annual Beefsteak Fundraiser on Saturday, April 21 at 6 p.m. The event will be held in the school gym at 136 Wyckoff Avenue in Waldwick. Tickets are $40 per person and include entry, a beefsteak dinner with salad, french fries, beverage, ice cream, coffee, and a “starter kit” with prize tickets. Donations of prizes and gift certificates from individuals and businesses are welcome. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Building Blocks Child Center, a ministry of Christ Community Church. On July 26, 2011, Weiss was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Kevin Crossley, who moved to New York last summer. In November of 2011, Weiss was due to run for the remainder of Crossley’s term, but a clerical error kept her name off the ballot. In November 2011, the council opted to reappoint Weiss to the seat. At that time, Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Attorney David Bole advised the council that the Municipal Vacancy Law provides that “(i)f the incumbent whose office becomes vacant was not elected to the office as the nominee of a political party, the governing body may, within 30 days of the occurrence of the vacancy, appoint a successor to fill the vacancy without regard to party.” Saddle River Saddle River’s voters will be asked to endorse GOP incumbents Bruce Walenczyk and Albert Kurpis. There is no contest for county committee in the borough. Walenczyk is currently serving as council president. The candidate and his wife, Elizabeth, have resided in Saddle River for seven years. With the exception of three years in Bethesda, Maryland, the Walenczyks have been life-long residents of Bergen County. The candidate was elected to a three-year term on the council in 2009. In addition to his service to the council, Walenczyk has been a member of the planning board and the zoning board of adjustment. Now retired, he had a 36-year business career that included service as a CFO and treasurer for various corporations. He holds an MBA in finance from Fairleigh Dickinson, and a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance from Saint John’s University. In the community, he is active with various clubs, including the Allendale/Saddle River Rotary Club and with the Knights of Columbus Council based at Saint Gabriel’s Church. Upper Saddle River Republicans Vincent Durante and Dr. Joanne Florio are seeking re-election to the Upper Saddle River Council. Durante has over 25 years of professional and managerial experience in pharmaceutical and health and beauty products. He has also served on the local board of health and as a basketball coach for the recreation department. Dr. Florio, a lifetime borough resident, has been a practicing chiropractor and nutritionist since 1988. Dr. Florio has served as a member of the local board of health and as president of Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club. She earned her Doctor of Chiropractic degree at New York Chiropractic College and holds a master’s degree in biology and clinical nutrition from the University of Bridgeport and a bachelor’s degree from Ramapo College of New Jersey. She is a Diplomate of the American Clinical Board on Nutrition and of the Chiropractic Board of Clinical Nutrition. Dr. Florio said she is dedicated to making local government more efficient, maintaining the character of Upper Saddle River, and representing residents of all ages through responsible leadership. She has served on the council since January 2010, and is currently the council’s liaison to the Upper Saddle River Library Board. She is also the mayor’s representative to the Upper Saddle River Youth Guidance Council. In addition to serving as president of the USR Republican Club, Dr. Florio is vice chairman of the Alumni Advisory Board for the School of Theoretical and Applied Sciences at Ramapo College. Dr. Florio is involved in the Newcomers’ Club and the North Jersey Depression Glass Club. She is a volunteer at the Church of the Presentation, and has been a guest nutritionist on Fox News, MSNBC, and Channel 5 News.
