Fishing Derby set The Upper Saddle Recreation Commission will host its Annual Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 5 at Liberty Park. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Upper Saddle River residents, ages five and older are invited to bring poles and bait and enjoy a great time. Bucky Rehain will be on hand to offer assistance to children during the derby and will answer questions about fish and wildlife. Prizes will be awarded. This year, the boy and girl who catch the largest fish will each receive a handmade fishing pole made by resident John Backos. Theater presents ‘Peter Rabbit’ The Saddle River Valley Cultural Center will present Beatrix Potter’s “Peter Rabbit Stories” on Saturday, April 21. The 3 p.m. performance will feature Tucker’s Tales Puppet Theater, which combines clever scenery and costumed puppets to bring these classic tales alive. Included in this performance are “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” “The Tale of Benjamin Bunny,” and “The Tale of Mrs. T. Tittlemouse.” The program is suitable for children ages three and up. Church hosts ‘Green Fair’ The Church of the Presentation, located at 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River, will hold its Third Annual Green Fair on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will be held in the church’s Community Room. Exhibits will cover composting, carbon footprints, Master Gardeners, birders, Bergen County Clean Communities representatives, a “Green Elephant Sale,” and more. March for Babies Walk set The Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club will participate in the March for Babies walk on Sunday, April 29 at Darlington Park in Mahwah. The women are walking to raise money for the March of Dimes whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature births, and infant mortality. Donations of gently used furniture, small appliances, kitchen accessories, holiday items, linens, sporting goods, toys, bikes, lawn equipment, baby items, books, and other household goods are needed. These items may be dropped off between April 29 and May 3 at the church located at 37 East Allendale Avenue. Limited pickup service of large items will be available from April 15 to May 2. The sale will be held May 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sale items will be spread throughout the church building, with each room showcasing different types of items. Relay for Life seeks participants The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Allendale invites cancer survivors to celebrate their triumph by participating in an inspirational “Survivors’ Lap” to open Relay for Life on April 21. This event will be held at 4 p.m. at the Allendale Volunteer Ambulance Corps Building at 26 Arcadia Road. The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is an overnight community celebration at which individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance, and take turns walking or running around a track relay style to raise funds to fight cancer. This year’s event is set for Sept. 28 through 29 and will be held at Crestwood Lake. Funds raised through the event support cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services in the Allendale community. Relay for Life is held in more than 5,000 communities across the country. The event gives people a chance to remember loved ones lost as they fight against the disease. Bargain books available Bargain books are available at the Allendale Library. Current and topical books, tapes, and videos for adults and children may be purchased at bargain prices in the lobby of the Lee Memorial Library at 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale. On display are many children’s books, paperbacks, fiction, non-fiction, and current bestsellers. The sale is ongoing and the shelves are restocked daily. Books are priced from 25 cents to $1. The sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Proceeds from the sale go directly to the library for the purchase of new materials
