Borough residents display figurine collection at library
Collecting is a family affair in the Waldwick household of Bill and Joan Travis Mefford. Since 1981, when they first saw a Precious Moments display in the Waldwick Pharmacy, Bill and Joan have been avidly collecting the endearing porcelain figurines of teardrop-eyed children. Seventy pieces of the Meffords’ extensive collection, featuring commemorative anniversary figurines among others, are currently on display at the Waldwick Public Library. The exhibit will remain open through Monday, April 30. This line of gifts and collectibles is based on the artwork of Sam Butcher, who draws and designs with the purpose of sharing messages of love, caring, and sharing. Butcher introduced his line to the public in 1975 on inspirational greeting cards and posters. In 1978, the first figurines were unveiled.
In 1989, the Precious Moments Chapel in Carthage, Missouri was completed. Featuring stunning murals, stained glass, angels, and other works of art by Butcher, the chapel, and adjacent Precious Moments Park, is host to approximately 400,000 visitors a year. The Meffords’ infectious enthusiasm for their hobby has been embraced in recent years by their 11-year-old granddaughter, Shawna DiCanio. This fifthgrade student at Traphagen School has her own budding collection of figurines, and helped her grandparents set up the exhibit at the library. The Waldwick Public Library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.preciousmoments.com or call the library at (201) 652-5104.
